Here are a few of mine...

The Edyne 602's are part of Capitol Records Studio B console. The Q8 MM61 mic pre & eq's are from the Hollywood Bowl console and the Q8 compressor are from the Oral Roberts console (these are finally being wired up, yeah!). Not sure where the Melcors came out of.

quality gear at a reasonable price ( you are not buying a power supply and rack with every unit ), space, create your own channel strips, addiction, oh and the club

Let's not forget portability. How cool and versatile is it to walk into a session as a producer or a guitar player and to pull out a lunchbox full of killer pres ?

Nathan has been kind enough to let me play with a Juggernaut for a little while. due to other stuff I have going on I really didn't spend as much time as i would of liked with it. I didn't do any direct sound comparisons to other pres and I only tried a few mics. And the picture doesn't really do it justice, especially the LED button, they look much better in person thumbsup bit i only had time for a quick handheld shot (no tripod or fancy lights)

I'm really impressed with how well thought out the switching logic is! Only took a minute or so to figure out what was going on. (hey, the phantom switch is broken! OH! Never mind, just a clever delay for preventing accidents! ) Switching to different transformers automatically turns the mute on and off while it's switching etc.

When I first opened it up I was a little concerned that the circuit boards the switches are mounted on flexed/moved a little bit too much but once I put it in my rack and powered it up, I realized that I was pressing way to hard on them initially. it only takes a medium light touch (but they do have a nice tacktile feel and there is no guessing if you pressed one or not, even if you aren't looking at the pretty lights!)

The lighted switches look awesome but may be a little bright for some people. I think it would be cool if the clip led was actually a dimmer switch too but, if that's not possible maybe there could be a jumper somewhere in the card that end users could use to set the brightness.

I played around with it as a DI for a electric bass and it sounded really nice. Clear yet full bodied. (if you could bottle the sound I bet people would drink it! ) I haven't really figured out the +THD switch yet. It seems to drop the output level quit a bit but I didn't record any of the bass stuff and listen back so it was hard to tell. I really need to try some electric guitar, DI and mic'd, while playing around with the +THD and Boost switches.

Tonight I tried recording my drum set through it and it performed well! (unlike myself!) I just used a BLUE OmniMouse right into the Juggernaut. No problems at all. The OmniMouse I'm still experimenting with as an overhead and it seems to sound a tad dark for that use and really brings the toms forward a little to much (in it's current position at least) so I wish I would of had time to try a couple different mics.

My initial impression is that the construction and sound quality of the Juggernaut puts it approximately in the same general leauge as many of the other top end 500 series modules I have tried (A-Designs, API, BAE, Shadow Hills) Looks and sounds great, is versitile and solidly built! Lot's of options and settings to explore!!!

edit; I forgot to mention that I think the switch label graphics could use a little bit of a shift upwards. The labels are almost dead center between the switches and I often wasn't sure which switch did what until I looked at the top and bottom of the switch bank to remind myself if the labels are under or over the switch. A minor thing to be sure but i think it would make usage a little more intuitive.

Thanks for the kind words John. Note that John has the production prototype which has a few minor differences from the final production units. The production model's switches are extra reinforced to the board to make it extra secure for years of reliability.

These will be slightly dimmed as compared to the production prototype you have (in particular the red and blue, the green seemed okay to my eyes). Also, the order of the lights is different in the final production, it will be (in order of the buttons)

Red-Red
Green-Green
Blue-Blue
Red-Red

It's a 10db pad on the output. Similar in philosphy to how you find on the OSA stuff, or like how people do when they put a 10db pad on the output of an API so they can yield slightly more harmonic distortion (hence +THD)...and also a way to avoid the input pad (which messes with the tone of the preamp). It gives a little edge for transformer saturation. Obviously since it's a pad on the output, you'll need to click the gain about 8 notches to get it back to the same gain output. Gain steps are approx 1.2 db depending on boost setting. It will be cleaner without the output pad on, so it's your choice.

Sweeping the impedance should make a big difference in the tone, at least it did with dynamics, condensers and tube condensers that I used it with so far. The higher impedances really open up the high end. Not to mention if people want a really modern sound there is the optional nickel output available (you don't have it there). The lower the impedance is, I've found that the darker the preamp gets.

Thanks John. Let us know what you think if you get a thorough chance to do a direct comparison to other preamps with a variety of mics and applications. I've compared it to a variety of preamps and FWIW I've found it to be more versatile than anything I have.

It always disturbs me a little to realize that the guy who uses more smilies than a 14 year old girl looks like he belongs in ZZ Top.
