Thread Starter | aux,bus,inserts,outserts....what does it all mean? i'm getting ready to jump into a 'upgrade' frenzy after years of strictly digital music production and performance and i would like to be on top of it before i start making purchases. now, this is not gonna happen at once, most likely for the next year or so but i'm preparing myself for it and one of the things has been making my head turn are all the ins and outs of a mixer with all their options of busses and auxes and inserts and returns and.......well, you know what i'm talking about. so for those who'd like to help me out understand it better maybe you could describe what does it all mean and do, in short sentences. and even more, point me to the right literature for further investigation. i believe the more i understand it the better i can visualize what i need to get and how i should set it up. thanks in advance_ r/_ |

| basically, insert point a place in the signal path where you can insert a piece of gear usually a compressor aux send a split of the signal that can be sent somewhere else usually reverb busses where the signal leaves the mixer usually you send to the master buss (stereo buss, 2 buss, 2mix) but you can send a collection of things to subgroups if your mixer has 8 busses, you could send all the drum channels to busses 1 and 2, then the buss faders for 1 and 2 would control the overall level of your drum kit feel free to ask any questions once you understand these basic concepts, the door will open and youll be able to look at it in a very logical way |

| Lives for gear | http://www.modrec.com/ Modern Recording Techniques great book, when you finish it you should have a much better idea of what you need and how it will work. I say start with something like that, rather than trying to scour web forums for tidbits here and there.
