Question Please help me evaluate this mastering job!

Hi All,

Here's an OLD song my band recorded 15 years ago that I just had mastered for fun. It has it's mix issues for sure (long story), but I still want it to sound decent for old time's sake.

Here's a link to the song (mastering website) where they put part of the song up for me to evaluate. My only concern is that it sounds a little distorted in the loud parts.

Am I imagining this? Is it an eq problem? It just sounds a little harsh (high mids?). I know they had to compress it a lot to even out the soft/loud passages.

I have to approve the song before they send it to me, so any recommendations are welcome!

Thanks!
Tom

Hmmmmm.

I clicked on the link in the post and it loaded fine.

Try this:

Index of /samples/ttwice

and then click on "17th winter"

Pretty tough to truly "evaluate a mastering" without having the source mix to listen to as well.

Just a thought.

Best regards,

SM.

Great point, Slipperman. I dont think I can post the original version at the moment. I guess just general comments about the concerns that I had in my original post (Harsh distortion/eq) would be fine.

The original mix was much more mellow sounding and very uneven between song sections, which is fixed now.

This is commonly believed but NOT TRUE. Fader rides will work wonders even in mastering without excessive compression. Compression can be applied after the fader rides.

Tough? Impossible unless its the same person doing the mix and the mastering. But it just isn't possible to tell which part had which effect without the pre-mastered source.

LOL! Ok...my bad on the compression comment. Anyone listen to the clip? Does the distortion level/eq sound ok?
