Perfect sounding or band sounding?

What do you prefer? To obtain a really perfect sound or to catch the " band sound " even if itīs not so clean-perfect ?

For me itīs more important the band sound, to hear them saying " itīs we playing " than " the bass guitar sounds really perfect "

That sounds like a production call.
I have few albums (I own less than 200) that have managed to translate both really well. One of my favorites is AC/DC's Back in Black.
I think that record has a perfect sense of tone, livelyness, band 'feel' and a production style that is as clean as the best of them. Very appropriate.
Roxy Music's Avalon is also a favorite as is Pink Floyds DSOTM.

Talking Heads first album, Journey's Escape, Peppers Mother's Milk, and anything from James Taylor also come to mind.

IMO...you want to capture the band. Part of why I hate most music that comes out today is because it all sounds the same...everyone going for the same tones and colors, and no one going for capturing the band's individuality.

Then again, I'm not doing anything that's making radio...so what do I know?
