I'm interested too, but the site seems wrong and there's no sign of the plug-ins.
Anyone knows what happened to him?

I think I found the link by searching through the KVR forum.

I DL'ed them a month or so ago because they look cool and there are so many of them. Honestly, every single one I have tried has let me down.

I heard the flack they had gotten but wanted to judge for myself. Now I agree with the majority; they suck.

If you guys are having trouble making plugins sound useful I seriously doubt it's up to plugin itself...

geee - it's not about "making plugs sound useful" ...
it's about does this plug emulation of a la-2a sound like the real thing or does it only look like it. Antress is not sounding like the real things. It's just eyecandy imho ...

everybody can make everything sound useful ...
even hitting your daw with a hammer and record the sound could be useful in some cases. so what's your point?

Really??????????? I would kind of have to disagree. That kind of sounds like the client that hires a studio/engineer based on whether or not they have an SSL as opposed to whether or not the work they do sounds good.

I've used some of the Antress pugs with great success. Are they exact emulations of vintage pieces of gear? No. At best they are in the 'general ballpark' for the most part. Or ' in the same vein' so to speak. But Antress is one guy programming out of his apartment experimenting around and to him it's probably a lot more fun trying to get them close and then putting neat skins on them. I'm not going to judge a hardware la2a based on how it LOOKS. Nor am I going to judge a plugin la2a on how it LOOKS. I'll judge both by whether or not I can use them usefully on my records.

I think it's important to note that like I said, this is one guy in his apartment noodling around. For him he's just experimenting and trying to improve his programming skills and if you read in the KVR forum he does nothing to tout them or hype them up. As such, they get updated on a regular and frequent basis (as often as once a month). The Gearwise video includes very old plugins that don't even exist anymore because he considered them failures. So it's important to understand that he makes plugins, let's people use them, and then decides if they are worth trying to refine. He's not like Waves who is goign to do massive testing on their stuff before they release it. I will say that the plugs have gotten considerably better as time has gone on (I think I'm on something like my 9th version of these things). There are a number of free plugins I use often (SIR, Blockfish, for example) and I've had great success using a few of the Antress plugs in the right circumstances. But when I use them I don't expect them to emulate a certain piece of gear. If you want to accurately emulate a piece of gear you need to be more than a guy in an apartment who doesn't get paid and gives his stuff away for free LOL. But shit, if I can use a FREE plug-in on a professional record that I get paid for and that gets on the radio and that people buy (or, um... steal), then I think that's great.

to the OP, I have no clue what happened to the site. I know it went down once before. I'd check the KVR forum and search 'Antress' every few days.

@ chris carter
you got some good points there.

but still: if a plugin has a photoshop gui of a very well known gear
and the guy makes it look like the plugins would emulate that outboard gear
his plugs have to be judged by that.

and as you said, they don't sound like it.
ofcourse that does not mean that they are not useful.
but its still a prestidigitation to me ....
just looking at a sweet gui and getting a mediocre sound.

and yes: they are free. thats's nice.
there are many free plugs out there which i think are pretty cool.
but i would call free stuff like - dbl GLITCH - cool!
not some strange gui rip offs.

Do they do an SSL buss comp? If I can get a sound clip I could include them in my SSL deathmatch which includes a hardware SSL comp to compare with now...

I've had some of the antress plugs on my system for quite a while now, i never expected them to be true-to-life emulations, and with that inmind they'vebeen useful flavours nowand then. I often use their "la2a" on the bass guitar group on punky records (It seems to LOVE my ampeg) and i often put the "illusionister" on one of the multi-layered gang/group vocal tracks for some extra depth. Works for my ears

I don't personally use them, but I've seen a video of the UAD 1176 & Antress blackface plug. They sounded very similar, but neither one sounded particularly better or worse, even at high GR. This was just a brief listen on youtube, really nothing scientific - but they did sound very good from what I heard.

??? ^ This could be him, or maybe a friend as I don't think English is his first language. I messaged Antress on KVR once to donate and I don't think he had the ability to accept donations. He should, those plugs sound quite good and I do use them a lot.

The direct link (they're now up to v 4.95) : Antress Modern Plugins I would also suggest NOT to replace old versions as the new updates sometimes change a little too much IMO - sometimes the GUI, sometimes the sound.

I've had mixed results with the Antress plugins. I suspect that almost all of my mixed results are user error..

Like most gear - some say they suck, some say they are great, and some say they are ok. There will never be a final answer. That said, the guy is giving them out for free, and they do do -something-, right? I'm all for that.

As for how they look, well as one broke-a$$ musician to some others I'll say that as long as I cannot afford classic vintage hardware at least I can play with software that looks like it!

Well after using them quite a bit, I like them even more.

The Lost Angel, Seventh Sign, Black Dragon, and Deathcore plugs are definite keepers. I use those left and right. Their effects are distinct and favorable for the most part, and frankly they are in the ballpark of their emulations (I'm referring to software emulations of software emulations of hardware.. Follow?) And folks, the Lost Angel is an LA-2A emu. You either like the sound of it or you don't.. There aren't enough buttons to chalk it up to user error.

The Modern series and Firechainer etc. I've used many times but rarely have kept on. I'm not feeling many of those. They simply lack character or don't have the sound I'm looking for. They're average, but you could do a lot worse. I've always liked the T-Racks 670 emulation for a spongy compressor. The Firechainer sounds like a mere shadow of it.

I really like the Firechainer on vocals, I've used it quite often with good results.
