I don't own a Great River preamp (saving money for it right now) but I think the general consensus is that they're great! I think it's modelled after the Neve 1073. I once lended an ME-NV1 and immediately fell in love with its sound.

I have both and they both suck!!! Just Kidding, they are both at the top of their respective game. I think that the SS Drums are the best IMO, I've heard others and he smokes them for what I need...and he is coming out with BFD2 sounds also. The Great River is great, I haven't found anything that it can't sound good with. With the control of the gain structure, you can have a lot of control of sound. The Pacifica is another very popular choice in this range also, I've never used it though.

I've got a 1NV - only regret is that I don't have a 2NV. Great sound, great DI, very flexible, built like a tank.

I have the Slate Samples v1.5, wish I owned a Great River. Slate samples are first rate, I use them with Session Drummer 2 in Sonar. Steve is supposed to release version 2 which will include cymbals and drum maps for popular drum samplers.

I consider Slate Samples one of the best third party computer/music products I've ever bought.
