Beyerdynamic M88 TG. Why does mine suck but another one sound amzing?

After renting a Beyerdynamic M88 TG and A/B'ing about 15 different mics on bass drum I liked it the best by far out of all them (Including U47 fet, EV RE-20, Shure Beta 52, and EV ND868). However I just purchased a brand new one from guitar center but it sounds pale cloudy and weak by comparison. The placement is the same within an inch. Did I get a bad mic or is there really that much difference from mic to mic?

Any info on the manufacture date of the rented one? They did make some changes to that mic. Most people like older ones a lot better than the TG variant.

nothing wrong with my TG.
according to Beyerdynamic (if my memory serves me correctly) the difference is mainly in the mesh. (TG version built for stage, thicker)
why not take it to GC and compare (there) with other new ones? the sample of the new sounds a bit hollow. but it's hard to tell, from a few drum hits.

The one I rented was also the TG variant.

Sounds like the new one has more himids/highs.
My guess is it just sounds new, while the rented one has already seen some extensive use and just sounds tired.

I have both the TG and the older one, they sound alike, but I never liked them on kick. If you ever have the chance to borrow an AKG D12E you will understand why.

There have been several reports that the M88 element is actually prone to overexcursion when used in a kick drum and can be damaged as a result. Some people recommend pop filters but these are unlikely to be of much help inside a kick drum due to the pressure changes being omnidirectional. Outside the kick drum a pop filter may be of some use.

You might like the sound of one that has been slightly damaged. The M88 has undergone some revision over the years.

Yes they have one they want to sell you at a hefty profit.

I've already corrected enough demonstrable falsehoods from the mouths of manufacturers for one week. Their word is often just another in the cacophony. And a particularly bia$ed one at that.

Too bad for them that the one that works for me is from an absolutely anonymous manufacturer (i.e.: I can't remember if it's Behringer or T-Bone) and didn't cost me zip.
