Most of the time it's about a foot out, aimed at the centre of the BD but tilted forward slightly.

i put it where i start to feel something hitting my chest..that's usually, say 6 feet away from the kick..but needs a bit of fine tuning to get the right place in relation to the close mic. 6 feet is pretty far away as far as cross talk from other instruments goes (not to mention the other drums) so i build a tunnel from collapseable chairs and heavy velvet curtains..the mic slides in under the chairs..when optimum position has been found, the curtains are placed to form the walls of the tunnel. |

| Bass drum distant mic position
A GIANT in our industry shared this with me many years ago. While the bass drum is being struck place your hand in front of the hole and move back until you 'stop' feeling the air hit your hand. Move back in a tiny bit and place the mic there. This works, of course, when you've built a tunnel (packing blanket). |

I generally mic inside the bass...but im assuming your only talking about outside....in which case I make about a 2 foot tunnel and mic it about there. If i did what the guy above recommended id seriously be 6ft away from the kick....which is fine...but is a long @ss tunnel! HAHA...try right in the hole...that works for me with a beta52...not with a d112. I also like it 6 inches back dead center. Really just gotta try...totally depends on the drum, the player, the heads used etc.

I usually use a Subkick for this but I will ocasionally use a mic and I'll usually place it fairly close, maybe a foot at most off axis. I've tried the whole tunnel thing but it doesn't really work for me.
