Who records drums at their own studio (or not at all)?

Those of you who have a studio of any type (bedroom, whole house, small medium or large commercial room, etc doesn't matter); who does or does not track drums at their own place? Or who doesn't track any drums at all and just does instruments other than drums? Thank you.

Mayabe it wasn't a part of the poll inforamation that you were looking for, but sometimes I will track drums on location. If I find a room that "kills", I may bring a set-up to track there.

Although I've tracked drums at many other studios (and even in my living room) in the past I've never been happier with a room for drums than I am with the tracking room in Suite A at Ante Up. I don't mean this as a shameless plug for my place as I assume most people reading this have a studio of their own.. They probably love their room too!!!

I think it's all about finding a room you "get", finding the sweet spot, and making it work for you!

Here's a pic:

I hate drums. I call them "over-engineered music-obstruction devices" but I have a set for the studio and record them all the time. If my clients had any kind of budget, I'd take them to a real studio to track (and mix) drums, but they don't.

When I put my room together (in a commercial space) the Idea was that I would do low budget records in my room and big budget records at other studios, but by pure luck it turned out that my space (and old book shop) was a killer drum room, so when i am in LA I never feel the need to go anywhere else.

I do all my drums at my own place. I'm still not happy with the sound of my room, but it's a work in progress. It gets the job done. I do admit I have a weird thing for imagining tracking drums in different places that I go. I went to a monastery in St. David, AZ and they have this beautiful chapel-auditorium-meeting hall type of room with 20 foot celings, huge wood beams and wood floors that is begging for a drumkit and mobile recording rig. Also, my parent's house in Texas: ranch style w/ huge open living room, vaulted ceiling and cherry floor. One wall of the living room is stone. Mmmm.....

I've never been happy with the sounds I was getting in my bedroom or basement with my drums. It was a room-treatment thing I think because i heard a lot of phase problems and alot of the tones were just not balanced because of the room reflections I think. Since then I've had an opportunity to track in Studio 1 of Metalworks which is legendary for the drum tones it can produce. I heard people around the world bring their drum sessions there specifically because it's one of the best drum rooms in Canada. I get why they do that. There's nothing like a properly balanced live room that has high ceilings and long halls for ambient sounds. In my rooms the drum sounds kind of died out really fast but in the big room at metalworks it sounded like the drums were allowed to "sing" and the tones didn't die out. Of course using purely Neve 1081 Preamps is also a huge plus.

I think tracking vocals and guitars and arranging MIDI can all be done with quality at home, but I will definitely be tracking all my "quality" drum tracks in a commercial facility where they have a top notch live room, preamps, and outboard gear. Analogue processed drum sound alot more "groovy" to me than purely digital tracked ones.

I have a decent size room with cathedral ceilings and hardwood floors, been getting really nice drum tracks, I'm grateful!

record drums at my place all the time but i never seem to get really satisfied with the results..if the ceiling were twice as high and not made of concrete i think the results would be much better though. always a problem with phase issues, especially in the highs.
but i must say that tracking drums is one of the most exciting things for me in recording. in terms of mic placement, mic choice, tuning of the drums etc there´s so much you can do to change the way the recording sounds and that´s what makes it a thrill and a challenge everytime i begin a session

I can compose, arrange, do vocals, guitars, VI's, and hand perc w/ great success...but my place is just too small(and too mal-treated) to do drums or mix with any kind of high quality.

I love doing drums tracks in my room but I have entertained drums by ftp (never did it)just because of a lack of really good drummers in my area.

Always do drums, minimal micing, 5 or 6 most, learning the room & the gear, getting better results as time goes on . . .

I always do drums at my own studio. Not a great sounding room so I'll put up a lot of damping especially for rock and metal stuff which I do a lot of. Normally at least 10 mics on the kit. 2 snare, 2 kick etc
