Thread Starter | Warning: Another Fine Piece of Equipment Shot to Hell
Beyerdynamic has completely revoiced their DT770 Pro headphones. I selected this model a few years ago because it was responsible, if not absolutely linear. The inevitable peaks and dips were in more or less the right places. The sound could be related to the tonal balance of respected monitor speakers. I found the overall integrity of tone more linear than equivalent models from Sennheiser and AKG. No, you couldn't master off them, but until speakers were available, they wouldn't lead you seriously astray. Time passes, creating wear and tear on all of us in the process. When I bought another pair today, I was horrified to hear a new phony mid-bass bump worthy of a $40 street portable that upset the tonal balance from top to bottom and obscured detail. This new sound is totally unreliable, bears no relationship to the sound I get out of any of my monitor speakers, and can't be relied upon for anything other than stomach upset. *****expletives deleted, swung about the room by the gonads, flung down and danced upon***** 3rd&4thT

| You have played moderately loud material through them for 10 ro 40 hours, haven't you? Drivers do change a bit over time and sometimes the drivers in headphones change a lot at the begining of thier service life. ...or did they go and change the cups, pads and band? -tINY |

The DT770 comes in two versions [80 ohm and 250 ohm] I've heard many times that there's a difference - that the 80 has a darker quality; could this be the reason [apart from the burn-in thing] I have the DT770 80ohm that I like - once heard the 250 in a shop, and it didn't sound very good and not at all what I was used to. [but I think it was through a behringer amp ]

Thread Starter | Yes, it certainly felt different. Still made in Germany, but probably with a different purpose. My own theory is that since Beyer never changes model numbers, they wanted to reposition it away from a classical/reference kind of headphone to a rock/hiphop kind of sound. Certainly you'll hear enough bass now to get your neighbors dancing, even if you're trying to listen to the Budapest String Quartet. Am now considering a Sennheiser HD-650 instead. Any comments, suggestions, etc.? 3rd&4thT |
