What is This contraption (for vox)

YouTube - Behind the scenes in the recording studio with Miley Cyrus!

recording of miley cyrus...what is that metal curve thing around the vocal mic called? that seems like that could come in handy in a home studio.

any info would be appreciated

SE Mic sheild. I forget the model number. Usually in the proaudio section of your music store.

It's called a pop screen or pop filter. And it's not only handy, it's critical for recording vocals. It will reduce the low end "plosives" which occur on "P" and "B." They also help in keeping the artist the distance that you prefer from the microphone. You can find them at any pro audio shop.

Enjoy,

Mixerman

Its a reflection filter. Think of it like a minature gobo that you'd position behind the mic to prevent sound reflecting back off the walls and into the back or side of the mic. So its designed to remove some of the sound of the room you're recording in. If you're room is already really dead then you'll likely notice very little difference; but if you're in a really live, I'd say it could be very useful.

Thumbs up a must for a less than perfect room

the se reflexion filter is easily the best way to improve your recordings in a deficient room. I equate it to doubling the ram in your computer. The difference is astounding and undeniable.

I was at guitar centers last week and I noticed they make a smaller 1
that clamps on to a Mic stand it also doesn't weigh 10+ pounds
(like the big one)
it looks like you could use it for overheads in low ceilings

I am not sure how toilet paper would improve vocal isolation from the room... perhaps you could post pictures?

Do you use single ply? Double ply?

Do some singers prefer ultrasoft?

Should metal bands use something more coarse? Paper towels maybe?

What's with the hostility? It contributes nothing to this thread.

I'm reading this great new book. You should check it out. It's called "Everything I know about recording I learned in kindergarten." It's going to be a huge best seller.

I have the small version. I do vocals in a very live room sometimes. Brick walls, 14 ft ceiling, etc. I've found it can help focus the vocal up a bit, compared to just throwing up a mic and going for it. I wouldn't call it invaluable or a night and day difference. But i would imagine the larger version might be...
