I was suprised to see THREE bass tracks on a multitrack that they were obviously running out of room on!

Seems that would be direct, mic'd, and room ..but knowing Baker, he might have two tracks but say there are three. HEE!

yes that would be very RTB to say that, but there are indeed three bass tracks. i have heard/seen them individually with my own ears/eyes.
direct, mic, and (IIRC) room.

Oddly I would have kept all 3 too, it doesn't sound right until you pile all 3 on!

neither (i was 5 when the album came out haha). just in the right place at the right time when those tracks were up on the pro tools screen in the studio. first thing i noticed were the three bass tracks and insisted on soloing them as i couldn't believe that a song that we knew was *crammed* with stuff on each track (and crammed it is - the lead vocal track has guitar parts stuck on it where there's no lead singing) could afford to have THREE bass tracks, but sure enough - there they were. listened to each one and yes they're different, but coulda fooled me as to why they needed three of them. i'll be the first to say (and i love bass) that bass ain't what i notice when i listen to bohemian rhapsody... but i'll defer to RTB!

I would love to see the raw tracks. Or even hear them.
I was totally blown away when I saw the Killer queen raw tracks. And heard them too.

Freezeframe the video at 7:15, looks more like Nuendo/Cubase to me than ProTools.

could be. i never said i was at the surround remix (my response was "neither" to the question of whether i was at the original sessions or the 5.1 session). i was merely in a studio that had the BR tracks up and they were up on pro tools.

indeed. the power of the vocals at 00:24 in *The Story... Part THREE* is worth the price of admission alone. that vocal arrangement is a study in itself.

When I worked with Mike Stone he close mic'd using 421's -white bodied ones, and I think D12 on kick. Thats all I remember. When he mic'd up the Bosendorfer, it sounded Queen. I have tapes somewhere -I'll dig 'em out.

RTB sez in that SOS article linked above:
"We weren't into multiple snare miking back then, so there was just a single mic on the snare. We tended to use mostly condenser mics at that time and generally Neumann U67s or U87s on the toms and overhead. The transformation between U67s or U87s was going on at that point and studios usually had one or the other. An AKG D12 was used on the bass drum. They were the days before the D112, which seems to be the standard now."

that and, of course, roger taylor's kit and style!
