| Oktava 012/Peluso CEMC6 Comparison I been searching for an upgrade on my Moded Okatava mc012 that I use mainly as overhead/guitar duty at my humble little closet studio. I found a Peluso CEMC6 on sale locally for a good price so i jumped on it to give it a go. Even though it was a single mic I'd figure i'll just pick up another down the road if i dig it and have a stereo pair. My first thoughts upon listening to the Peluso was OUCH.... They sounded pretty darn crispy and harsh and wasn't digging it as a drum overhead. I liked it on guitar though and found i didn't have to EQ like i would with the Oktava. So i began to wunder, "is this mic harsh sounding or is it that the Oktava's are little on the dark/muddy side and i'm just used to there sound after years of use and anything else will sound crispy/bright to me. So i figured i'll hear what it sounds like in context of a mix and lay down a groove. I'd figure i'd post some soundclips comparing the 2 for those wanting to give them a listen. The soundclips are of 1 drum overhead and my swap meet piece of crap guitar so you slutz can hear the difference in the 2. I used SCA J99 preamps, Mic placement was pretty much the same for both and tracked 1 (same) performance. There was no processing done of any kind on the mics or anything else. WARNING, i'm a hack guitarist and drummer so go ahead and talk your trash please. disclaimer. These clips and post prove absolutely nothing so if your in the mood to talk smack, stroke yourself with scientific pompesnous or anything else stupid PM me so I give you my address and you can come kiss my A$$...............lol... J/k.....no i'm not. EDIT! Will post new sound clips |

| Thanks, I've been considering both of these mics for a while now. Glad to have an A/B. |

| Mic Shootout The Oktava seemed a bit "warmer" on both the drum and guitar samples. It had nice depth and resolution. The Peluso was noticeably brighter, with similar depth and resolution...so I would say the one thing that stands out to my ears is the Peluso's brighter soundscape...perhaps necessitating some manipulation to get a warmer sound. Good mics...both of them.

| I usually tend to prefer darker mic's but in this case my vote is for the Peluso. It's got more glue IMO. |

| Are your samples above a older "Dorsey mod" MC-012 or a relatively new OktavaMod MC-012? I ask because the "Dorsey mod" was published six years ago and was intended as a DIY project using commonly-available parts not requiring equipment to set FET gain or bias. Better results can be obtained with a bit more work, judicious parts selection and favorable topology changes.

| I will bite on your invite. the guitar playing / guitar itself is too terrible (and too brief) to make a judgement there. having heard extensive samples of each microphone elsewhere though, I have to say I've always preferred the pelusos on acoustic guitar. in fact I own a pair and they provide the most breathtaking results of any mic I own, I love em. magical, for me, on acoustic guitar, and I'm a guitarist more than anything the drum part I like! I can see clearly that the oktavas sound better there, more "laid back". I don't like the CEMC6 on overheads in my place either, a little sharp / thin / hollow, or something. they do make a cool room mic, though, to pick up that nice big "epic cymbal wash" sound. I might have to pick up some oktavas for overheads! makes me think "beefheart" (trout mask, which is one of my highest references) ok now you can tell me again to go fk myself |

| Do post some clips of a guitar player sometime, playing something other than an entry level Epiphone... |
