I wish I had known about this site when I first started to get into recording. From my little experience, I'd say I think the best thing to do is set a budget, and make a mental note of what the most important components are of your studio. What kind of music are you going to be doing? How good does your room sound? There isn't much point in spending a lot on equipment if the room sounds like dung. Ask around about the specifics of each piece of gear you're interested in. Don't always rely on what people at music stores are trying to tell you because they're trying to sell you what they have.

Hey, I work in a small (14 by 9) bedroom studio myself. I've got some really nice gear now, but the absolute best investment I've made (and you're going to get this advice from a lot of people cause it's the truth) is the $700 I spent on acoustic treatment. The most expensive equipment in the world will not produce good sounding recordings if the room sounds bad. There is a ton of good info already posted on these forums about diy treatments and how to determine your needs. Check them out before you worry too much about your gear. I know it doesn't have the appeal of all the fancy gear, but it's absolutely the most essential part of making good recordings. Best of luck in your endevour.

+1 for acoustic treatment. FWIW - Small rooms sound like bathrooms... |
