going for a dirty raw recording...

my main question is what are some good cheap room mics for recording a live band?

The music is very energy driven and I think would come across best if recorded live. we're not looking for a clean pop sound at all. our main focus is capturing the live energy of the music.

it's a five piece band with vocals, drums, guitar, bass, and a dj. the style would best be described as punk/hip hop.

any opinions on what kind of mic and some different techniques on how to set them up?

thanks.

it's funny you should mention this, presently listening to Karps Demo Tape

i would say that the chain and room are going to have a great affect on the crapsound you want as well.

RadioShack mics come to mind, but so does running a cheap mic threw a distortion box.

standard deal.. nasty mic with standard mics then blend to taste.

a filthy compressor comes to mind as well.

my two drunken cents

The Avenson STO-2 matched pair is dirt cheap, but should capture the full room sound very realistically.
