Drum Snake ?

I've been wanting to get a 8 channel snake for my drums but was wondering about something. Has anybody ever built a snake out of multipair cable with about 8 feet of play on the fan tail end that plugs into the mic so that there's enough slack to position mics were they need to be? How would the durabilty of the thiner multipair cable hold up under normal use? I'll probably just set it and forget so it wouldn't move around much.
I figured this would be more cost effective then buying a snake with a breakout box and building a few cables.

Not exactly like that, but I had these guys :
FOUR STAR Wire and Cable
build me a loom that lasted a whole US tour and is still working today.

Loom huh, learn something new everyday.
So the thin mic cable from from the multipair held up pretty good hug?
I was thinking of getting some mogami multipair or maybe even the Canare star quad multipair just so it be a little thicker.

I'd recommend at least a 12 channel snake for drums with lots of returns (headphone mix, click tracks, etc) the more the better. I'd say 8 channel is bare minimum considering you might be tracking other instruments along with the drums at times.

well i only have channels of preamps & 8 channels of analog input on my RME multiface so thats why i'm going for only 8 channels.

Yeah, but you may be in a different situation in a year from now so why not plan for expansion now rather than need to get a whole new snake down the road?

I only mention this from experience.

If you're hoping to do something cheap that doesn't need to withstand being packed up regularly, why not just lash 8 mic cables together with zip ties? I used to use a 'snake' like that before I bought a 'real' one with a stage box.

Just put a zip tie every foot or two, and leave enough unlashed at the ends to do what you're talking about.

thats actually what i have i just need about an extra 10feet now because i moved my drums to a different location in my room. So i figured I might as well keep it all self contained and make something out of snake cable. Its just going to stay in my room and not move around much.

Someone in another thread I contributed to on a similar subject suggested a decent looking 8 channel snake that was under $100 new! I can't remember what thread it was or the snake brand but it was fairly recent (maybe a couple weeks ago)

there are some Mogami 8 channel XLR to XLR snakes on Ebay. Keep a sharp lookout there and you can either score a good one for cheep or at least the raw cable.

Redco Audio does a great job if you want to save time and spend a little more.

Best of luck!

Hey chingon, www.pulsartech.net.

It doesn't have the loose ends though, it has the box.

Very good price, roughly 100.00 with shipping. Didn't have one shorter than 50' either. Perfect for my situation, I have two 4x pre-amps also and this was primarily for the drums.

It's nice having the box out in the room. Keeps it clean.

Thanks. Those products are inexpensive.
If I use a snake with a box I would only need it to be around 15 feet long. My room isn't that big. Yea it would be nice to have everything tidy and self contained. Probably looks better then the 8 cables i have velcrod together.
