aluminum foil on drum heads??

Right at the very start of this video, it appears that the drummer has something reflective taped on all of his drum heads. It looks like aluminum foil, but it's pretty straight and flat. Any guesses as to what this is?

To me, this looks like regular clear heads (yes, on the snare drum too) with reflections from a lightsource...

Folks who were around in the 70s: was it at all common to use clear heads on the snare?

no no

it's Aluminum foil on the drummer's head.

this prevents the drummer from picking up radio transmissions of click tracks from other galaxies.

it looks like regular white tape on clear heads

the heads are picking up a reflection but I bet in a clearer video it would not look so silvery.

That's my guess....evans hydrolic heads and then taped up even more. Gotta love the dead 70s drums.

even though i didn't view the video (dialup=no video)..

they do make foil tape (the real duct tape)

but it makes a very poor dampener ( i tried it once)

Just as a point of interest...

I'm fairly certain that somebody made silver reflective heads(not just the middle like the Ludwig "silver dot" but the WHOLE head) at one juncture in the early 80's.

Possibly Evans?

Obviously, this is a decade earlier, so I'll shut up now.

So realistic, almost looks as if it was a lasered one.

Care to tell a bit about it in case it was yours? What material, making etc. ...?

Remo did indeed make silver heads in the late '80's...I played on a set that had Pinstripes, and I believe they made them in Ambassador and othoer weights as well...it did something to the sound, they didn't seem to have quite as full of a sound to me. It wouldn't surprise me if Evans made something similar as well.

Remo made them. And still makes them to this day.

I remember a lot of the "metal" guys used to use those for the "cool" factor back in the day.

Evens made the silver or mirrored finish head back in the '70s, too.
They were SUPER dead and SUPER awful sounding!
They were like hydraulics, but WORSE.

I knew a guy that had a chrome Ludwig kit with the mirrored heads.
YIKES!!!!

They could be REMO Pinstripe STARFIREs or i think they are similar in name to that. I had one on my used 26" kick when I picked it up. Ive since changed it because it sounded flat.

Unfortunately not my work. I plagiarised the image from an article over at MIT

If ever you're hearing a little too much sizzle at 1.5Ghz, this might just do the trick. Great for de-essing bats.

Now back to your regular programming.
