What are your must have effects/stomp boxes?

I feel my studio is lacking in pedals and FXs,
which ones do you think are must have in a studio?

Crybaby or Morley Wah.

A decent fuzz unit, a decent distortion unit, chorus, flange, phaser, delay and reverb. On overdrive I hear a lot of good things about the Seymour Duncan SFX03 twin tube pre/distortion pedal.

Tube Echoplex is cool ..other than that, can't think of a pedal I'd want.

Klon Centaur, Analog man tubescreamer, analogman comprosser or bi-comp...
Memory man delay of course... Not a whole lot you couldn't do with this collection...

Then again... depends on what you're recording I guess too..

Dynacomp, tubescreamer, memoryman, fuzzface, big muff, bad stone, some sort of tape delay, sansamp, wah wah (Vox or Fulltone), and your overdrive of choice (mxr distortion+ is one I like). There are many more great boxes out there, have fun!

Spent a good part of last week trying to get the right guit tone for a tune. Used all of my fav's..........including Sparkle Drive, AnalogMan SD-9 and Soul Bender.

In the end I turned them all off and cranked the ol' amps until they broke up just right.

OK...since this is The Moment Of Truth.......I NEVER turn off my MXR Dynacomp.....ever.

MURF (any of those moogerfooger pedals) would be a nice addition to a studio.

Ibanez AD9 analog delay!!!!!

Fulltone OCD (for when the BJR or AC30 dist. doesn't work)

The new BOSS RE-20 Space Echo emulator stomp box (you might think it is cheesy or gimmiky, but it actually rocks...someone was paying attention when they designed this one...and I usually don't care for BOSS's COSM stuff)

PS - I just missed the deal of the century by 125 minutes today...a 73 Echoplex in perf. cond. for CHEAP...some assbag beat me to it...the guy says he can get another...I hope so...once I get that (or a real RE201), THAT will be at the top of my list....I'm a delay junkie.

My 79' Euro Narrow TS-808
My Japan 100volt BLACK ibanez Pue5 TUBE.

I had hoped to finish my 808 series collection but its just to expensive.

I might go with a complete Ibanez UE-400 and 405 rack., Virtually the same as the 808 era chip sets.

I was about 8 years old when that stuff came out and I have one!
Ok, rambling now. I don't use it as an "overdrive" but rather as a booster and I use the Pue5 tube as kind of a hair metal era fuzz, peel the paint off the walls box.

Boss rv3 (not made any more) ,and any of the sans amp pedals for drums are great. Rv3 is also great as a guitar pedal- sounds very fake, but very good, and apparently alot of famous guitarists use them. I have been offered more money for mine than what I paid for it, and I refuse to part with it.

Jim is right! Unless there's some kooky part that you, the producer, or the guitarist needs (and you'd have to have THAT particular Kooky pedal)...

On the other hand. As a fledgling 'lectric guitarist, having the studio gives me an excellent way to talk the Mrs. into buying ANOTHER pedal. "We need it for the studio, dear."

And I like hitting pawn shops and the used section of music stores for deals.

Pedals I have/use:

PETERSON STROBE STOMP - Most used, most loved!!!

Keeley Katana Clean Boost
Ibanez Ad-9 analog delay
Maxon Od808 drive
Nobel ODR-1 overdrive LOVE IT!!!
Visual Sounds Jekyll & Hyde
Boss HM-2 old heavy metal
Boss Tr-2 Tremelo
Electro harmonix Small Clone -Chorus
Boss DD-3 delay
Mxr Wylde Overdrive
Dunlop Original crybaby WAH
ORIGINAL Thomas Organ WAH

I only tour with a 3 or 4 of them, but it's nice to have the different colors when experimenting in the studio.

The Fulltone Full-Drive 2 MOSFET pedal is the single best distortion pedal (good range - probably not the best for really hard stuff) I've ever heard. I just got one and took my THD hot plate back because the Fulltone did everything the hot plate did and more. You can run it low with just a touch of distortion and you'll get a great cleanish "Eric Clapton" sounding tone or crank it up and get Jon Brion himself, coming out of your amp.

I would highly recommend this pedal. And I don't recommend things just because I have them :-)

NOT!

Most all guitarists that use them bring their own. Up till the last 10 years, I've never heard of studios stocking guitar stomp boxes. At least I never saw them listed with the gear.

If a guitar player wants to use a favorite pedal, they will bring it. If the don't, they probably don't want your pedals either.

Excuse my inaccurate knowledge of English, in fact I meant FXs in general, be it tape delays, tremolos, phasers, fuzz, reverbs etc..

Just anything to add flavour , create unique sounds, but not plug-ins.

There are 2 basic types of "guitar" processing while recording. One is pre processing, fuzz tones, wah pedals, anything run into the amp after the guitar.
The other is post processing, these are the "effects" one puts on a track, usually after it's recorded.

Pre processing effects are usually the player's domain, it's "their" sound.
Post processing effects are the same stuff you use for other things. If you thought pedals were expensive, load up a rack with some Lex, Eventide, and other high enders and those pedals will seem like a very good deal.

Those are boxes one would need for general studio use, the fact that they can be used as guitar effects adds to their value and helps justify their cost.

Just don't expect the next guitar player to be carrying a 480 under his arm. That's our job.

pedal

z vex and the moog pedals are my favorite right now, Lots of the smaller companies making highend pedals have listening samples of their pedals.

memory man!!

its dark and subtle distortion sits beautifully behind the dry. its great for short slaps and its especially great at longer feedback type delays.

+1 on the Tube Screamer

+1 on the Big Muff

+1 on the Memory Man

The Tube screamer is an essential tool for any -non-metal- guitar player, IMO. The Big Muff doesn't always work in a live setting, but it records really well. Memory Man has a totally different vibe than the digital delays. Can really add that special something that takes a guitar part from ho-hum to holy-shizzle.

Ernie Ball volume pedal, old analog delay...I like my Ibanez AD9, but could just as easily use the Boss DM2 or 3. I'd prefer an echoplex, but they're too much trouble to drag around to gigs. In the studio, they're killer. That's really about it. I don't always use a distortion/boost pedal, but when do, I've got an old Tube Screamer or Maxon 808 that I like. I know there are some much nicer boutique pedals out there, but I just can't pay hundreds for pedals.
