Avedis MA5/ A Designs P1

Forgive me in advance... I'm adding to the fodder! But, one man's fodder is another man's filet... or something like that...

First of all, thank you "pan 60" for all of the great 500 series reviews! I've read them all at length. I just recently sold off all of my preamps and got into my Lunchbox and added one VERY lonely 512c to "get me by." So, now it's time to fill 'er up with some other flavors. To preface, I have not been able to demo anything yet, so please keep that in mind with my questioning. I'm looking into adding a P1, the Avedis MA5 and perhaps the LaChapelle 583, as well as one eq "flavor."

My questions are... are any of these preamps too similar in sound to one another (i.e. the P1 and MA5 sound similar or completely different)? Also, when thinking about an eq, is the API 560 graphic a viable option over the 550/560 or even the Avedis eq?

Most of my work is as a producer/ programmer, with overdub sessions... styles will range across the spectrum... rock guitar, fiddle, r&b vocals, bgv sessions, Leslie micing, nylon and steel string guitar, rock vocals, steel guitar, horns, choral, etc. etc. etc..... I have plenty of outboard compression, so I'm wanting to make my Lunchbox a "Here's every preamp flavor to cover every situation I'll even encounter" unit... and still keep my marriage intact!

Thanks for appeasing me, folks. It's an exciting time for this format... looks like I've caught the bug and will be entering rehab soon!

I haven't heard any 500 series pre that sounds like the P1. It's a slighty saturated unique sounding pre. I haven't heard the MA5 yet but it's supposed to be Neve-ish. Woudn't think they would sound similar at all.

No, this isn't a "GOTTA DO THIS AND DO IT NOW!!!" move. It's been one I've wanted to do for some time, and now was the appropriate time. I promise... I don't jump on bandwagons... can you say "Titanic?"

The P-1 sounds a bit flater than the MA5, but it all depends on what your source is that you are recording. The MA5 has a real big and rounded sound to it.......great on vocals.

Kinda funny, I'm the same way. I have a lunchbox with ONE 512c and that's it. However I have my MA5 on order. Should be here this week. Then I'm diving into vocals

P-1..............OH's, synths.
Biz...............Grand piano, acoustic guitar, vocals (female sound good)

I really appreciate the info, gentlemen! I think you've helped solidify some direction for me. Thanks! "Akoppenheffer," I took a photo of my lunchbox and sent it to a friend a few weeks back, joking about how silly it looked to have JUST the 512 in it... might as well post it!!! :)
