Help for a friend getting a sound card

My friend is needing a sound card for listening to music, maybe some editing, and tracking, but tracking is the least important. He has a budget of $300. He mainly does live recordings and wants to edit them, and just listen to music while he works on his computer. This is not for a serious setup, but he wants to have options in the future. It can be Firewire, USB, PCI/PCI-e whatever. Thanks for the help and direction...

M-Audio makes a wide array of choices. My friend got the "audiophile 2496" for $100. cant be beat! sound is relatively decent . . .

Are there any relatively inexpensive soundcards that have 8input adat connections?? The only thing I can find is the Alesis IO/26 which scares me, then the MOTU 8Pre which is $500 and he was trying to spend just $300. I think I'm going to tell him to save a little more and get the 8pre. Then when he wants to record a little he has 8 inputs and the ability to transfer all the stuff he has from his 8-track ADAT machine to computer.

RME HDSP 9632 or 9652 might be just the thing he's looking for.
Adat I/O, stereo line I/O, PCI card for about 300$

The RME is a great idea but the one with ADAT is about $550, but it made me start looking at other things and there is an E-MU 1616 that is about $350. Does anybody think E-MU is any good, bad, indifferent? Thanks for the ideas...
