API A2D Mic-pre vs Lavry Blue Mic pre

yes... similar, but a different question

I found some samples of things cut on the blue...

(and I have been able to use one in the past)

any thoughts on how the pre's in the API stack up to them?

apples and oranges?

i am intrigued by the possible pushing analog and digital levels differently on the API...
would these give me 2 different pre sounds depending on how i drove them?

(ie transparent vs "api sound")

thanks
rw

I have both of them.

Totally different kinds of preamps.... The API is colored... the Lavry is not...

thanks tony (neighbor)

have you heard that API unit?

some of what i read sounded like it could sound more transparent and less colored if the analog levels were turned down a bit and the digital outputs turned up...

that said, i have never been able to hear the unit in action.

Yes, I have both of them... I think they are kind of polar opposites.

Lavry is the transparent type of sound. The mic pre would be similar to a GML or Millenia....

API didn't want to make a transparent converter... they wanted to make one that sounds like an API.

So, you have something that is basically as clean as you can get with the Lavry and something on the opposite spectrum(colored... in a nice way) in the API.

(is that a crazy question?)

thanks
russell

I live in Mass, but my studio and my office are both in Providence, RI..

Anyway, it's not a problem. You would have to schedule it with me in advance.

Drop me an email.
