Is it better? Well everything is subjective. Sometimes on some voices something like SM7+DAV is a great combination. But for a single channel use, and mainly for vocals GR is very very good. It has nice color, it's forward, but not too aggresive, nice and smooth.

Not that I'm that guy or it's a "solo610", but...

Here's one--even with no reverb on the vocal.

Sm7b>LA610>SpeckASC

Thanks you both for the tracks, it sounds nice...

@ mikymike, I here a lot of great things about the API but they don't have it in Holland to test. But a producer told me that the Joemeek OneQ wil better for my SM7. What do you think?

FWIW, I've used the SM7 with all preamps I own and with good success. Much like any other mic, the SM7 works fine with any good preamp.

So for me it's more about leaning towards certain preamps for certain tasks. Clean electric guitar = UA 2108 for me, distorted cabs = TG-2 or UA 2108.

On vocals, I liked the SM7 with a LTD-1, BA 312 or UA 6176, depending on availability and the timbre of the voice. SM7 on snare thru LTD-1 was a recent discovery for me as well.

Neve 1081 or 1073 with a SM7b is something special.

Electric guitars sound awesome with that combo.

I just got the sm7b also. I'm hanging it off my another new item - an atlas MS25 stand with a boom and a hanger. I'm running it through a Joe Meek TwinQ and it sounds great. Preamp gain just shy of 50, make up gain (using the compressor at +8) and output about +2. So I guess I'm running at 60db. No noise (that I can hear).

Great mic. Wish I had a couple of other pre's to hear with it.
