Micing a dynamic 'experimental' guitar part

...So last night I was experimenting with 2 delay pedals at once, and got a really cool trippy delay effect. But it's all over the map dynamically. It was accenting fret noise, sliding, etc. Not that I'm complaining. That was part of the fun.

What I'm worried about is it soundling like mush when I throw a mic on it. Will an sm-57 be a good match for recording something 'experimental' with such fluctuating dynamics? It sounds good to my ears but I dont know what might happen ( it was too late to mic it up ) when I do mic it up...

Any suggestions before I try that might lead me away from possible frustration?

I don't think you'll have any problems using an SM57. Just keep the mic at least a few inches from the speaker to help alleviate any proximity effect; if it's still muddy back it off some more. Also, make sure not to use too much gain on your mic pre; leave some breathing room so that the louder noises don't cause an overload.

I'm not sure what mics you have so I don't really know what else to suggest, maybe stick a room mic out there as well and see what you like. Best of luck!

If it sounded good to your ears, maybe you should put a dummy head mic where yours was.

Actually, when I'm fooling around like that and I get something that I like I stick a room mic right where my dummy head was when I liked it.

it'll sound totally different unless you do a stereo recording. one mic does not capture sound the way two ears do.

this is why vets tend to plug up one ear when deciding where to place a mic; the instant you try it, you'll understand why. things sound completely different in mono.
