How much did you make last year as an Engineer??

Just curious, how much did you make last year in the recording biz??
Did you Make more recording music or outside the miusic biz? (corporate, commerical, etc.) If I offended you in anyway by asking this question I apologize in advance.

damn...really? i never had to pay anyone to record when i was in school!! i even managed to put together a 35-piece string orchestra recording without paying anyone (which was rare, cause those damn string players always wanted money)!!

I think he means tuition. But wow, 35 piece orchestra without having to throw anyone $20? That must have taken a lot of work, I've made it through so far (school) without having to actually pay anyone. Usually "Come on, You'll have a demo of your song recorded!"

Actually made a reasonably nice amount this year . . . but going to NYU means all of it went to tuition. ALL of it

I'm going to Metalworks Institute which is attached to metalworks studios. Got the SSL and ICON systems and access to the main studios where Nelly Furtado, Gavin Brown, OLP, K-OS, and occasionally Bob rock like to work. They have really good instructors, Alan Cross and Greig Nori teach there as well as Bob Ezrin's music managing son and many other pros. 15K a year is reasonable considering the amount of networking opportunities that are available.

difficult question to answer because i own and run a music production company involving recording, composition, act management, running a studio orchestra, sync licensing and voice / foley recording. I'm not gonna reveal last years turnover, but it was a lot! Personal income from this? In dollars it'd be about $100K

Actual profit after all the bills were paid about $4000 this year.

Not so good but that is without any advertisement and the studio only being half finished so something to build on.

I haven't earned yet. I'm coming out of my full time education this Easter, and I'd like to make a couple of grand this year. It depends how much time I have to network and find new work.

Maybe Gearslutz should have a forum of proper program to help out us coming out of education? UNfortunatly, our education establishments don't seem to care after you stop paying them.

I'm at the 'hey, let me mix you guys!' point, only taking donations. So far I made a few stickers, a hat, and a ART MPA Gold Pre (bought new tubes for it myself, though). The quality of my mixing is getting there (been doing my own stuff since roughly 2001), just gotta learn to better convince people to use new strings/heads.

I know what you mean, but i've always found that to be just dumb. I have no problem telling people what I earn, and Ive certainly no problem hearing from people who earn ten times as much or ten times as little. It just doesnt matter - some foolish pride thing really.......I just dont have the "my dad's bigger than your dad" thing. I'll gladly tell you exactly how big my dad is......ooer.....
