About the same as when I was in the restaurant business. Which is just fine with me, because the working conditions are so much better.

There are very few things about my Berklee education that I look back fondly on, but the low tuition (at the time) is definitely one of them. I think I was paying $2000 a semester...or maybe it was $2000 a year?!?!

Of course, this was back when we recorded on stone tablets with a mastadon bone chisel...

Why not attach an anonymous poll with some pay ranges on it as people don't like talking about it.

Intersting topic. However, I agree with the poster who stated you're probably not going to get many replies. At least not honest replies. You never know when the IRS or your wife/girlfriend might be checking the boards :-)

This might make for an interesting poll though...

I also think this would be an interesting poll. I've thought about this topic before. I just do this on the side, pretty much as an artistic/creative pursuit that I enjoy, but have wondered how much folks that do this for a living really can pull in...esp. in light of the current state of the industry.

PayScale - Music Producer Salary, Music Producer Career

Realize that these figures come from people willing to answer the question. Until I expanded my company into video production (which lead to a lot more audio post work) I barely scraped by. The music recording business is hyper-competitive and unless you have a competitive edge in your market, you'll find yourself fighting for the bottom with every person who has a PTLE system and another full time job.

The payscale tells me that I did quite well! And in between I partly renovated my new bought house and made some progress in the garden. A productive year after all for me!

Wow.. I'm only about 1,200.00 under the mark for my live gig.

Good thing I have additional clients, though.

You shouldnt be paying a damn thing in taxes. Anything under $5k is non taxable from my experience living in CA. In addition, you sould have so manly deductions you should at least 0 out your $3k.

I'd be interested to know who was surveyed for these pay scale statistics.

Was it any of you?

I can't even fathom how someone is Los Angeles can get by on under $3k per month.

Well, it seems to be aggregated by mostly the people who use the website.. so, I mean.. how many M-Box's ARE there in L.A.?

I thought about my numbers, too.

It may well just be "national average salaries of all the motherf*ckers who fill this shit out".

Since his tag says "non-pro", presumably this is on top of his regular salary...hence it's taxable.

But yeah - if you've not spent at least that amount in gear (and I have a feeling that if you've spent MORE than that in gear, and your studio work is set up as a business, you can claim tax BACK from your non-audio job! at least, you used to be able to do that in the UK, not sure if you can still) you're not enough of a gearslut!

Personally? I've earnt just about enough from studio work to pay the mortgage + living costs, and supplements from occasional pieces of lecturing and other work that go towards running the car and stuff like that....in other words, breaking even but there's not a lot to go on other stuff!

Somewhere between 3 and 9 figures.
My accountant will have the final numbers by April 14th.
I'll post my tax return as soon as it's ready.
