Stereo imaging

hi,
always wondered how some sounds are so narrowly centered in the middle of a stereo mix as if theres another speaker there, like drums, vox, bass. i cant seem to achieve this , cause the sound always seems to sit too wide using a single mono ch and not giving that illusion..is this something that only expensive consoles afford with their huge L-R headroom?, or are their mixing techniques that help achieve this effect? ive gotten pretty close , by having another sound being really wide in a sense allowing the mono sound to be percieved somewhat narrow, but it still isnt dead center...how do you narrow sounds/sources, sum-difference L-R? anyone kind enough to share or hint? thanks much.

In my modest knowledge, Good tracking, good mixing.

Placing sound 'upfront' in the mix is largely due to paying attention to instrument depth.

The stereo field is both left to right and front to back. Once you have a sound source centered you can practice placing it closer or further with EQ and effects. Reverb and compression come to mind first.
As for any tips? Think Dry first. That might help.
For a stellar example of 'dryish' mixing and mega upfrontness, check out the new album from Prince. Damn! Someone was getting some un-believable tones!
