500 series comp for vox?

Whats up slutz?

For xmas this year I got an API lunchbox!

But...uh... It's empty.... And I need to fill it!

I'm looking for a compressor for vocals... I mainly do hip hop and r&b...

I have an SM7B going through an Aurora Audio GTQ2 (Neve clone-ish)... The combo gives me a pretty fat and dark vox....

Any idea's of what would be a good vocal compressor for the way in?

I'm waiting on what people think of the new Purple Audio comp (the Action) because I recently found out I live about 15 minutes from Purple Audio... Being that close to the company is a comforting feeling!

I have searched but haven't found anything quite this specific...

Anybody else think there should be a "500 series" forum?

Thanks in advance!

Are any of you that own either the potion or essence plan on getting the purple action?

I've heard great things about purple audio's stuff, so if that happens to sound as good or better than either of the buzz audio comps, then I would get that. (1 rack slot and half the price!)

The Buzz audio stuff does have me salivating though... Those who have the essence, have you used the potion and vice versa?

Tony, any details on this new comp?

Right now there are only 2 500 series comps actually available that you can hold in your hand. The Buzz Essence and the Buzz Potion. Both are great and different. The Buzz Essence is best on vocals, most of the time. It's a very flexible opto compressor. The Potion which is FET comes into play for more aggressive singers (like heavy rock, metal, a few hip hop guys have said it's really good for fast rapping).

lol. no worries. API 500 series compressors thread and you forgot the API.
It's the super fast "Fixed" attack that has so far put me off the 525. Plus I think it jions the 550's by not having a balanced input

I've had some great results with 525's on vox, sometimes that ceiling function can be just what the DR ordered. Sometimes preffered them way over the essence, but they are both great comps. I recommend get both.

Aaah, but it says "500 series" in the thread, not "API 500 series"...maybe it's not a fact, but it feels like "500 series" is more like saying 'tissue' now, rather than saying 'kleenex'...if you know what I mean (it's for everybody and crosses over brand specifics).

The Essence set a very high standard. The Potion is also great for more intense stuff, which I seem to do less often. When I use it on vocals I typically go crazy (think Deftones vocal compression) then turn the mix control down to around 60%. If you concentrate on the breaths, it's easy to gauge how much or how little you need. That said, I'd reach for the Essence 1st.
