Good topic. I'd like to hear from someone who owns or has used both.

The Avantone is a generic chinese microphone. It has a standard Chinese Capsule (more Neumann style I think)and output transformer. The circuit board uses different resistor and capacitor values compared to a real C12 . The second half of the tube is used as a cathode follower while in the original only 1 tube stage is used.

The Peluso uses the same body (although without the Avant's cheap Low pass and PAD switches), perhaps the same power supply. But has a different capsule (AKG style)and transformer. I'd also think the circuit behaves more like a real C12 unlike the Avantone. Peluso make their own PCB's I believe.

The Avant is the same as an Apex 460 (but with PAD and Low Pass switch)

I don't mean to stray off topic too much, but I had a Nady 1050 (wide body version of the Apex 460/Nady 1150, that was shown to be the same mic as the Telefunken M-16 MK I), modded with a Peluso CEK-12 capsule, Cinemag 2480 transformer, upgraded caps including an Auricap in C8 and a Black Gate in C6, Zener diode mods in the power supply, a NOS GE JAN 6072a tube, cathode follower removed and a better cable, that was a fantastic sounding mic. My point being that if you find a good tech who works at a reasonable rate, you could probably have a mic made that is superior to the Avant and at least approaches (maybe equals) the Peluso at a total price that is not much more than the Avant.

I checked into that exact mod with a guy here on GS, and by the time I bought the mic, capsule (now much more expensive with all the DIY guys out there. I think Peluso wised up), transformer, misc parts and labor - I was up around $800-850. and it was still an apex 460. for that much money, I'd rather pop for the peluso.

Yeah, I can see that. I started that one with a used 1050 which I got for $100, and used a tech in NYC who was unusually generous with his labor rate and only charged me his cost the price for the parts he sourced. He even painted the mic body for me. I sourced the capsule, transformer, cable and tube myself. My total cost was roughly $600.

Im complety floored over the Peluso 22 247 I just got.Im now going for another mic, though im looking for a double duty mic like the p12 vocals and overheads. At this time I cant afford 2 p12 so this is why I asked about the avant cv 12.

I heard the mono overhead clip of the Peluso p12 and again Im completly floored.Gotta have that LA OV sound. If the Peluso is that much better than I think waiting a month or so to buy the second P12 is a option.Just didnt want to spend the 1175 and be able to get 2 cv12 for 998 that sound like the p12.So so far it sounds like the p12 might be a winner

I read the reviews by Barry Rudolph about the CV-12 and I really respect his opinion, and I feel I am in the same boat where I really shouldn't spend the money for 2 x P12's right now, but maybe I should wait until I can.

Any more info on these two head to head?

Should have got in on the group buy.....a rediculously low price for a very similar (to one of those versions) mic.

There are about 15 other mics that use this same body, including the Apex 460, Telefunken M16, Peluso P12, Avant Cv12, Nady 1150 and a slew of others.

The P12 uses a Peluso capsule, the Peluso PSU (with 9 polar patterns), a different audio circuit, a different tube and a different transformer.

So, in other words, it has nothing in common except for the metalwork.

I have used both (unfortunately not head to head) but for the money the Avant is the clear winner IMHO. It is an amazing deal for 500-600(whatever) bucks.

The Peluso is a fine microphone though that I love to get my hands on any time i can.

I just bought a Peluso 22 47LE. My next purchase after paying it off will probably be a pair of P12's. I wish somebody would do some clips of them for stereo overheads on a drum set.
