Please recommend a good beginner's guitar book/DVD

A friend of mine who lives 1000 miles away wants to learn guitar. I have no idea what the good beginner's books/dvd are these days. He's smart and already understands music (notation, good ears, etc). He needs to learn what to do with his hands.

Thanks!

Mel Bay makes a good book which takes you from scratch up to some heavy reading. Mel Bays Complete Method For Modern Guitar. Its what I use. Depends what hes wanting to learn really. If he wants to read well than this book will do it. I use this and Mel Bays Deluxe Encylopedia of Guitar Chords, Scales and Arpeggios. I havent needed ANYTHING else yet.

Mel Bay is a good beginners book. I still have mine from 32 years ago. However after looking around on youtube I've found countless videos on beginning as well as advanced guitar playing. I'm not talking about the ones you have to buy - just people showing how they do their licks and stuff. Pretty great actually although your friend may not have access to the internet.

Cheers!

If he's never played at all until now private lessons wouldn't be a bad idea to get him on the right track (in addition to books)
