Best Albums of 2007

What was the best sounding album of 2007? Why? Tried to find a post on this but failed...

Best sounding? Not sure I can answer that one. Probably haven't heard enough of them!

My favourite though (from a musical standpoint at the very least) would be Neon Bible (Arcade Fire) ... its sonics have grown on me. It's a little smashed but it's got some texture to it.

bruce springsteen - magic
animal collective - strawberry jam
feist - the reminder
the national - boxer
frightened rabbit - sing the greys

From what i have heard this year:

In Rainbows: Radiohead

Neon Bible: Arcade Fire

Miracle of Five: Eleni Mandell

What Happened to Television: Greyboy Allstars

Writer's Block: Peter, Bjorn and John

Wincing the Night Away: The Shins

100 Days 100 Nights: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings

Since it was mentioned. i want to give my honorable slam award for WORST sounding album of the year to Bruce Springsteen's "Magic"

2nd worst i've heard being Mccartney's "Memory Almost Full" being 2nd because I at least like Mccartney's interesting production ideas.

Silverchair - Young Modern

BTW - These guys have always been a favorite of mine. I feel like they continue to evolve and stay fresh with each album. The sound of this album is killer. A far cry from the cliche time aligned, drum replaced, auto-tuned, recto-rock sound we've come to be so familiar with these days. It has a bit of a trashy sixties-ish vibe with some nice use of delays and eq. It's definitely worth a listen.

another BTW... I saw these guys at the Newport in Columbus, OH a few weeks ago and it blew my mind at how talented they really are. Their performance was flawless. My face is still melted from the amazing vocals and guitar work of Daniel Johns.

For 05 (or was it 04?) it was Miles Gurtu (Robert Miles and Trilok Gurtu), best production I have ever heard - but for 07, off my head:

Radiohead 'In Rainbows'
Yeah Yeah Yeahs 'Is Is'
Les Savy Fav 'Let's Stay Friends'
Do Make Say Think 'You, You're a History in Rust'
Bat for Lashes 'Fur and Gold'
Amon Tobin 'Foley Room'

Notable mentions to Gravenhurst, Dillinger Escape Plan, Low, Battles, and Efterklang.

Kings of Leon - "Because of the Times". Great songs, great sound. Hats off to Ethan Johns on this one.

Radiohead - "In Rainbows". Follows a close second to me.

Like my choices or hate them. It's a free world afterall.

These are the only two albums I listen to regularly anymore.

Spoon - "Ga Ga Ga" - good but not as good as older offerings. Spoon is one my favourite all time bands but WTF were they thinking with that album title? They could be in the top list for recordings released in 2007 but I think they will also top the shittiest album title lists of 2007 also.

Im gonna agree with:
Silverchair - Young Modern -has some great songs and crazy textures...i believe it was recorded at a few different studios as well which is kinda cool.

Honestly I couldnt get into that Arcade Fire album....so it kinda fell by the wayside for me.

Laura Veirs' album "Saltbreakers" produced by Tucker Martine was put out this year and sounds great to me.

Here's a great example of just what great work goes on well below the Label Radar:
CD Baby: HECTOR QIRKO: Wherever You Go

Hector's been a mainstay of the Knoxville Tennessee Music Scene for years. He's been in some very influential regional bands (Balboa, the Lonesome Coyote's)... now he teaches Anthropology and plays for fun, and does Studio Work in Nashville every so often.

I think "Timbaland presents shock value" is pretty cool sounding. The percussion on "give it to me" sounds pretty huge and fresh!

Albums are so retro--I usually go by songs. And more by what they are than how well they were recorded:

Dude N Em--Watch My Feet YouTube - Dude N Nem - Watch My Feet
Enur and Natasja--Calabria 2007
Band of Horses--Funeral
Kanye--Stronger/Can't Tell Me Nothing
50 Cent--Ayo Technology
Timbaland--a few off his new album--he always kills it (Ayo is his beat and I believe he helped Kanye out on Stronger)

Oh also:
Lupe Fiasco--Superstar
with an honorable mention to Cool Kids' "Black Mags" just cause its fun.

The one that stood out for me was Coheed and Cambrias "No World for Tomorrow" which was really the only 2007 album I purchased

I did get Radioheads new album but I havent gotten to really listen to it yet

Last edited by andygomez; 19th December 2007 at 04:09 PM. Reason: added the Radiohead bit

No strictly or even primarily for production and sonics, I think Jesca Hoop's album Kismet was my favorite new album of '07, but then I didn't buy many. Jesca Hoop is one to watch.

Though it was released in 9/06 I have given John Mayer Continuum quite a few spins. The groove just "fits" and flows well throughout the album. And of course we have Steve Jordan and Pino Pallidino doing their thing. Rather than see it as another radio friendly schlep fest....I have to say that he broke out and has brought back some hope for the future of an ailing industry. Remember the days of the "album" concept? We need more guys with his clout as a musician out there doing their thing...it helps us and the industry....not to forget that the tunes are pretty good as well. Don't poke fun till you have listened to it 4-5 times with an open mind and forget about that puppy love crap.

My Picks

Here are my picks:

Mutemath - Not sure if this is a 2007 release but thats when I got it, freaking love this album.

MIKA, Life in Cartoon Motion- Very cool production on this

Matthew Good - Hospital Music - I've always liked what this guy puts out, it may not be the perfectly engineered album but I like it, it has an "aura" to it.

Actually, I think those were the only new albums that I bought this year...everything else was released years ago

My picks for worst: I'll leave this alone...
