I rediscovered Big Country, "the Seer" and "Steeltown" in particular, that was my 2007 musical highlight. It had been near 20 years since I last played them and my god, what a band, what great songs, what a cool passionate sound. R.I.P Stuart.

do you like The Beatles?

If you like(d) The Beatles, you should listen to Dada.

They released their best album (A Friend Of Pat Robertson)
this year. Check it out

I didn't realise there were so many sluts with a fantastic taste in music. A good year for music. I reviewed many bands and none of them really did it for me which was upsetting.

New Buffalo - Somewhere, Anywhere.
Okkervil River - The Stage Names
Ampoule - Self Titled.
The Album Leaf - Green Tour EP

The local WAMi Compilation was a good one this year too. Recommended listening for anyone who can get a hold of it.

Klaxons - Myths Of The Near Future
Nyles Lannon - Pressure
Modeselektor - Happy Birthday!

I have to remember a few more

wow...i didn't see a single mention of Nine Inch Nails Year Zero.

to all the old idiots who say there wasn't anything good in 07 or have a clever comment like "I'm still waiting for a good album" Maybe you are in the wrong industry, if you are really this bitter and negative about music...do something else, or get off your ass and make a good cd.

There was TONS of music released this year, mainstream, indie, people with no lables but a passion for art. I can understand the "I think the top sellers on the charts suck" mentality, but to say no good music was released this year is just pessamistic, bitter, and/or lazy. Maybe it's time to just retire and listen to your local classic rock stations all day....exciting!

ok here is my assortment of beloved oddities. lotsa girls made it to the list this year!

10.) Supersilent – 8 (Epic Norwegian Kraut-Rock Esoterica)

9.) Weasel Walter overdubbing Bartok String Quartets on Drums (Sick. Plain sick)

8.) Jesu – conqueror (Post-Millenial Lovelessness)

7.) Behold the Arctopus – skullgrid (Math-Rock for Ph.D’s – Fun, Fun, Fun)

6.) High on Fire – death is this communion (Heavy as shit)

5.) Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band – ep (Oh well, a girl and a harp)

4.) Marnie Stern – in advance of the broken arm (She’s a girl and has a guitar. She is tapping and Eddie van Halen should just admit defeat!)

3.) M.I.A. – kala (everybody likes her. I didn’t want to but she rocks)

2.) James Blackshaw – cloud of unknowing (12 string acoustic bliss, pure speechlessness for days)

1.) Flying Luttenbachers – incarceration by abstraction (farewell album of weasel walters venerable outlet. Weasel is kind of a pissed-post-punk Zappa sans humor and my man of the year. A mind**** not for the faint of the heart. Them being gone will leave a huge gap)

honorable mention:

PJ Harvey – white chalk (Bold change of approach and beautiful album!)

Citay – little kingdom (Like an acoustic re-incarnation of Led-Zep...)

Dew Scented – incinerate (Essential German Thrash)

best gig 07: Sonic Youth at Stubbs in Austin. Didn't expect anything but the slow rolling-stonification of thurston and co - and then this. man - they are awesome! On top of their game!

looking forward for 2008:

President Evil – hell in a box. Those Germans Trash’N’Roll like there's no tomorrow!

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs debut album. Japanese chicks that rock your pants off

Brutal truth – new album. grind and weed galore

Outkast - new album - can't wait to find out where they go this time.

U2 - new album. the edge doing disco and heavy metal...?!

Trisha Yearwood did a fab record this year.

On the "new artist" front, Sara Bareilles and John McLaughlin were the two debuts I really dug. If you count Emerson Hart's solo album as a debut...that had some great stuff on there.

Old faves: Grace Potter&the Nocturnals, Trisha Yearwood, Jonatha Brooke, Michael McDermott, Joss Stone, Suzy Bogguss, Maia Sharp--all turned in fine work.

On the unexpected front, Mandy Moore's latest is a DAMN strong album--all the way through. Some of the most memorable hooks. Also, Vanessa Carlton finally made a great record after always being in that category with me of "really talented but not quite there".

It was actually a relatively slow year for me. Not enough new artists. I blame it on being the first year without Tower Records' listening stations to check things out and discover new music. Sad day when they closed their doors, IMO.

I love hearing about music I haven't heard about... I'll be checking many of these bands out. As for my faves this year (that I can remember):

Canadian rootsy band - Nathan - album's "Jimson Weed" and I REALLY enjoyed it.

And no love for Super Furry Animals "Hello Venus" ?? How can you not love a CD featuring the track 'Baby Ate My Eight Ball' ?

And it's a little old now I guess, but this year I discovered the disc Ry Cooder did with Manuel Galban, "Mambo Sinuendo". Fan-freakin'tastic.

John Mayer - Continuum

Some of the best electric guitar sounds. Well... I guess I can't say best. Just so appropriate for each song.

The drum sounds are incredible as well...very natural...but that's what I expect when Steve Jordan is playing.

Not really 2007, though. But, I suppose you picked it up late?

Star of that album is Pino...Jeez, if I could play bass like that...

As much as I hate to say it... Led Zeppelin "Mothership".
35+ years later and still nothing tops them.
What amazing songs that still sound fresh today.

Right now I'm digging Back to Black - Amy Winehouse. Big thick sound - throwback to old school soul and R&B but modern bottom end. Would love to have been their when they recorded and mixed it to see how it was done. Hope this girl survives long enough to give us all more of her huge talent. Her music is chillingly real. And she's the writer on most of the CD - at least that's what it claims. If she did pen these tunes we're talking about an incredible artist here.

She's had better moments, but she's got to be mentioned nonetheless!! great lyrics/poems as always.

Also Radiohead and Silverchair.

my two cent's worth

Some great records mentioned here. For those who say that there weren't any decent albums (or good-sounding albums) released this year, I would question how hard you've been looking for new music.

Below are my 2007 faves, both sonically and musically:

Blonde Redhead - 23
The National - Boxer
Laura Veirs - Saltbreakers
Crowded House - Time On Earth
Hanne Hukkelberg - Rykestrasse 68
Richard Swift - Dressed Up For The Letdown
Dan Kelly & the Alpha Males - Drowning in the Fountain of Youth
Rufus Wainwright - Release the Stars
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
I'm Not There OST
Ulrich Schnauss - Goodbye
Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha

Happy xmas & new year's everyone!

Nothing decent being produced which is why CD sales are in the toilet.

The Eagles Eden CD would be my choice though....
The rest of it?

Sorry but I think productionwise its one of their best, but song-wise its kinda poor.

My votes:

Gorefest - Rise to Ruin
Radiohead - In rainbows (a little more dynamics would be nice but I'll take it as it is)
and Primordial - To The Nameless Dead (fuzz galore, I love it!! )

Amy Whinehouse just admit it everybody

Whites Stripes hello?..sonically very very exciting

Spoon best sounding record I've heard in a long while

not so much (at all)

Bruce Springsteen ...this could be a great record...I just can't tell by listening to it...
