Handheld mic recording... what to use?

I´m recording an album for a metal band and the singer feels that his performance would be better captured if he has a handheld mic...
I´m not sure on what to use.
I have a SM7, which would probably sound good for this screamo type of vocals, but I´m not sure if it´s comfortable enough to be handheld... should I go out and get an sm58 or beta58 or what??

Is there anything in particular that one needs to bear in mind when recording vocals this way..?

(I also have sm57, beta57, 421, 441)

Any tips and advise welcome!

See if you can snag a Beyer Soundstar II off e-bay. Great handheld mic for metal/screamo vocals. Sounds similar to SM7, but obviously handier. And they are cheap.

i have had this prob before. i game him a sm57 to hold and put a M49 in front of that. he know i was not using the 57, but it helped him preform. you may want to try that

I've got a couple of Shure KSM9s, and I'm crazy about them. They can take high sound pressure levels really well.

I've heard of people hand-holding the SM7 before. I've tried this myself, I ended up wrapping the mounting bracket in a soft cloth so it wouldn't make noise against the body of the mic. If the singer doesn't mind the weight of the mic, that would probably be the way to go.

I use a 57 for this all the time, never any complaints about quality.
