Air

Ok - this christmas period I am going to finally deal with this, just need some advice.

I am tired of sitting in my control room with 2/3 guys seated at the rear, vocalist or bass player or whatever other musician is in tracking room, doing take after take and fu..cking up, and after say 1 hours I start snoozing (carefully lowering my head so I cannot be seen through the partition window by musician in tracking room) and then I prod myself and embarrassed look at the musicians behind and to my relief they are also out.

Its like those air crash investigations shows- all the dudes in the cockpit are out cold due to depressurisation and the passengers (musicians tracking) are awake and none the wiser.

In addition to the split cycle air con I need fresh air-the control room is sealed up water tight-so I am going to make 2 large boxes, one on ground-with fan blowing in?, through acoustic baffles inside box, and going to put outlet box with internal acoustic baffles in ceiling-so fresh air from ground level outside in, stale hot air out ceiling.

Altons acoustic handbook not much use-but what I need help with is is it better for fan to blow in, or for fan to suck out (no innuendos ), and I am also concerned about bringing in dust by bringing in fresh air-what do guys do to filter dust out of air, and does anyone have sites where there are good box baffle designs etc.

Thanks

it's always better (i.e. less energy and more efficiency) to actively pull air out of a space and let the negative pressure draw air in from the outside source, either passively or with a little booster fan.

Thanks for the reply gregoire. For some odd reason I was fixated on putting a fan to pump air in on the outside at ground level. Thinking about it more showers have fans which suck the air out like you suggested, and this also follows the natural inclination for hot air to rise. I think I will put a shower type fan on the end of the box in the ceiling.

This will also make it easy to set up 2 separate single element filters on the in grille to filter out dust.

shower fans are anemic and generate way too much heat and noise for the volume of air they move.

get an inline centrifugal fan and wire it up to a speed controller so you can keep it at a trickle (i.e. silent but effective) for everyday needs, or crank it up for a rapid evacuation of the space. get one that's rated to move the total volume of air in the space in 5 minutes. iow if your space is 500 cubic feet, get a fan that's rated for a minimum flow of 100 cubic feet/minute (cfm).

lastly, stick the fan at the *end* of the exhaust run, not at the beginning. it'll be quieter because it's farther from your space, and it'll work better because it's easier to pull air thru a duct than it is to push it out.

good luck!

Check some gardening websites. They make turbine fans that move massive amounts of air without taking up a bunch of space. They're specifically made for pulling in fresh air and getting rid of the stale air. They work great.
