Best Pop Punk album you've heard (quality-wise)

What is/are your favorite pop punk cd(s) to use maybe as a reference or just think it is a great mix in general?

new found glory - sticks and stones is one of my favorites, their self titled sounds great too. I feel most current "pop punk" cd's sound rather bad. That nfg cd just rips.

I heard someone call Pink punk a while back maybe it was a spelling error......
Pixies stuff was interesting, but a little before my time, only just. Not sure if that was real punk?

alkaline trio - goddamnit
also, get up kids - four minute mile sounds amazing

i hate the sampled drums / multitracked guitar sounding albums that sound more like arena rock than anything that deserves being called 'punk'.

I thought Sum 41's "Chuck" was really good. "Does This Look Infected" was pretty good, but more juvenile. Granted, they were younger then.

And I don't call it pop punk as much as Power Pop. It's a tough one to combine the words pop and punk.

I dig the new Four Year Strong album. Sounds pretty solid, the drums are good but sample-replaced to all hell, however, the guitars absolutely rip on that album.

I pulled out 'four minute' mile the other day, I remember it sounding alot better than it really does. every thing sounded very small to me.

Not really pop punk, but more pop/hardcore- Silent Majority, Life of a Spectator. Hands down one of my favorite producing/mix jobs on a small indy. (originally released on EXIT)

PS. also, this record has my favorite kickdrum ever.

Lately I've really been digging 'Darkbuster's 'a weakness for spirits' album, Some really good production in a few songs.

Suicide Machines-destruction by definition

Descendents-Everything Sucks

the sample replacement work on that record is pretty sketch at times (especially the toms), but i dig the kick and snare samples they used. pretty good sounding record (not really pop punk, kind of pop metal/hardcore with all the double bass and major key "breakdowns"). i hope this thread doesn't turn into a debate about how "pop punk" isn't punk. we get it, move on.

my nomination goes to Cartel - "Chroma". great sounding and incredibly produced record. love em or hate em, the Boys Like Girls record (Matt Squire produced / engineered it I believe) sounds pretty awesome.

something irks me with the way the vocals sit on both the boys like girls cd and the cartel cd...

both sound really....i dont know....slapped on top....not part of the mix

+1000! I love that album! Not only great tracks, but a very high class recording for what it was (check the drum sounds in Foreign Policy). I never could figure how much of that Spit Stix stuff was real though. There are things in there that make him sound like he's got three or four hands.

"If you're part of the mainstream, you're part of the problem"

Punk can be popular, but cannot support the status quo. Too many three chord bands are all attitude and no depth. And punk rockers don't sing about chicks.

That said, I like Rise Against. That's about it. Bob Mould's last techno record was pretty badass tho.

suppose it depends on your definition...

I'll throw out:
Refused - Future of Punk to Come
NOFX - Punk in Drublic
Helmet - Meantime

and cosign:
Descendents - Everything Sucks
Green Day - American Idiot

These records always seem to take too many liberties in the DAW editing department. They've used Vari-Fi in several places I thought it was unsuitable and too 'cutesey'. Just my 2¢.

alkaline trio - good mourning
descendents - everything sucks

not really punk but I use them as a ref anyway (frequency-wise):
weezer - green album
drive-by truckers - the dirty south

in my opinion the songs and the attitude of the players is what makes a punkrock record.
just make it sound as good as you can.

hope this helps a bit

i'm a sucker for quality pop punk
because it is so very, very rare.

some recent-ish releases:

The Starting Line - Say It Like You Mean It
New Found Glory - Sticks & Stones, Coming Home
Saves The Day - Stay What You Are, Sound The Alarm, Under The Boards
No Use For A Name - Hard Rock Bottom
Jimmy Eat World - Futures, Chase This Light
Bad Religion - The Empire Strikes First, New Maps Of Hell

not all the above albums are just 'pop punk', but they at least touch on it to some degree

No not confused. Sure it has elements of metal but it is still punk. It is more punk than blink 182 sum41 and all that teenie bopper crap that folks now call punk.

If a song/band is played on primetime top40 radio it can't be punk. It is pop and nothing more.

Same thing with 'alternative' how can something be alternative if it is played on top40 radio? It can't be. Hence the word 'alternative'? Bands like Nirvana, pearljam, seether are not alternative. Beside being cheezy they are pop.

Maybe in 2007 Pearl Jam is alternative since they havn't got consistent airplay in ten years. But when they came out they were pop. If you're stuff is played on MTV or a clearchannel type radio station your stuff is pop. Not punk not alternative not underground but pop.

pop = popular = mainstream
