You are right on point! That's exactly what they heard after LWW. The result Rancid (2000). Don't get me wrong I did 2000 as well and I like the record. But... we worked on LWW off and on for 1 year. And they(and I) put their entire heart and souls into the record. It was the record THEY wanted to make. Not many artist get that chance. Time will tell!

I know, I was there.

TJ, as I trolled the threads I did lose the threads name "PoP Punk" which as you state, their not, but I had to come out on LWW so that anyone that had not heard that masterpiece might give it a listen. Its my favorite album of all time and you with all others responsible should be extremely proud. All involved are revered in these parts and it beats out London Calling as the #1 masterpiece in my mind, including all music styles not just Punk and you were there doing it, man its a damn honor to hear from you. Man I'd love to pick your brain about that year long journey.
Anyone reading this that has not heard this greatness buy it and you'll be blown away, regards ,,deda,,

Additionally, TJ I apologize for the crap statement I made in my post about Rancid (2000). I was disappointed after waiting for their next release hoping for another ground breaking album that when it was released I never gave it a chance. I just kept my LWW in the player in my truck and lived in the past, regards ,,deda,,

The Wannadies - Bagsy Me

this is what i think of when i hear 'pop punk'; it's also a great record sonically, at least to these untrained ears... close, intimate, yet never oppressive.

PARAMORE

The drums are sample light, in some cases just going through reverb. The Drums on the record are DW, if you listen closely you can tell every hit is different. The Mic techniques Dan Korneff and I used were key.
So was the ADR comp and the SSL.

ps....ok I will admit I had an spx90 on a fader and I did ride that snare hard.

For me there is something weird about how the snare ring sits in the tracks, especially on born for this. Its has a real obvious pitch to it that sounds discordant.

Otherwise its sounds great, kinda plasticly, but not in a bad way.

More about the Refused

I'm listening to the Shape of Punk To Come right now and I love this album! The guitars on it are enormous - just massive! And I have to throw in a 2nd or 3rd for Samiam.... I listen to Astray often, it's one of my favorite albums.

There has always been fashion in punk it started that way.

The style of clothes etc was always at least as important as the music.

Anyways my favourite punk record is:

That's backwards. It's Monkeys for Nothin' and the Chimps for Free. (Don't you get the pun?, haha)

That said, excellent album.

As far as pop punk goes, nothing comes close to Enema of the State IMHO. That albums kicks ass! I must have spent a whole summer listening to that album while at the beach with my friends. The are a lot of subtleties to the production and song writing on that album; I swear I can even hear some Beach Boys influence in there...

Props to David Bendeth for a great-sounding record - thumbsup I only just discovered Paramore whilst I was at a studio all day, sitting through hours of heavy-rotation emo/punk/pop drivel ona Music TV channel - This one song "That's what you get" really stood out... rocks hard, my man! \m/

I'm just going to throw a few names out their that might not be "100% pop"

good references are: The Clash: London Calling. Older Misfits stuff seems like a no brainer. Also some Green Day stuff that isn't American Idiot. I don't know: AFI, The Used. Turn On the radio, its that simple. I haven't listened to these bands in ages though, I don't want my music sounding anything like whats available on pop radio. To loud.

I think a lot of people don't like this CD because of the heavy limiting, but I love Finch's first cd... I think it's called 'What It Is To Burn'. I lost the case... =\

Anywho, I love the songs, the drum sounds, and the guitars are great! I'd love to be able to record vocals like that as well.

I also enjoyed Paramore and the singer in my band loves them a ton. She always wants us to cover them for fun. We played a show and covered Misery Business and we overheard a few kids outside saying they thought we were the band they were hearing on the radio. Weird.... I thought we sucked. Anywho, speak more about the production of that disc!!

trombino also did the early blink stuff.

who did the pennywise mixing? all of their records are awesome. a perfect example of punchy punk drums and soaring guitar walls.
?????

he also did mineral a few others. i love his style.

i felt like the pennywise s/t record had this cheesy kind of stadium rock sound to the drum... esp. the toms. the guitars are kind of sandpapery too.

Can't read through the entire thread, but for recentish stuff I would have to say Snapcase - End Transmission, this album kicks my ass every time (Is it pop punk? Probably not). For older stuff I have rediscovered Rich Kids on LSD - Riches to Rags.

Back in the day Ryan Green had his hands in all the greats (as far as I'm concerned). And a great guy too!

yeah, weird, finch -what it is to burn was the first trombino record i heard, first record i that i would listen to and go "those guitars sound so,,."thick" ,..and "wide"
lol
it's limited to hell, i always actually thought the cymbals were ducking under the kick drum, but i can crank that record and hear every single note of it
:)

If you listen to the Finch tune "Here With Me" it sounds like the cymbals are ducked under the snare.... is this just the general compression?

Are these drums sampled? They are so perfect... but seriously I've heard the Finch demo's or whatever and I can still listen to them cause I like the tunes. When I bought the CD it just put me over the top.

i wish i knew, i asked mark tormbino via myspace if i could ask him a few questions and he said sure. i will definitely be asking these things.
it seems like he might have the drums on their own buss for heavy heavy limiting, last time i checked though trombino wasn't a very big fan of samples, just great mic technique? this could aso be why the cymbals duck under kicks and snares.

i'll be sure ot find out
:)

and Sugarcult's "start static" comes to mind too.
