Samiam- you are freaking me out....

apparently, Samiam was signed to a subsidiary of some major, recorded the album, and then either got dropped or the label shut down (not sure which), and it took a few years for them to get the masters and get it released on an indy. Amazing record.

Jawbreaker- Dear You.....

Not my favorite Jawbreaker record, but IMHO their best sounding. This was their major label debut (on geffen if memory serves). Of course it didn't sell, and the band broke up under the weight of massive debt.

When the majors started snatching up punk bands in the early 90's it really was a bummer, because there were some truly great bands, and on the one hand, some bands (green day) went on to make better records and grow as artists, while others (Jawbreaker) failed to achieve the commercial success, and because of the prevalent atttitude of the day, lost alot of fans for 'selling out'. I remember an issue of 'maximum rock n roll' that had a close up photo on the cover showing a mouth with a gun it, the head line read: "Major Labels, some of your friends are already this f**ked"

luckily later into the 90's some indies got big enough that the bands actually did make a living. and now some of those labels are major powers in their own right (Epitaph, Fueled by Ramen).

but anyway, some other good sounding records.....

Stiff Little Fingers- Inflammable material

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones- lets face it

Avail- 4 AM Friday

Hot Water Music- Fuel for the Hate Game

Lagwagon- Trashed, and Double Plaidinum

NoFX- So long and thanks for all the shoes

Social Distortion- White Light, White Heat, White Trash.

The Gits- Enter the Conquering Chicken

+1 for the Queers, don't back down

+1 Fugazi, 13 songs

and a big +1 for too much autotune on Teen Idols 'pucker up' .....Matt, i don't think AT is punk... he he he

Would the Cars be punk pop?

I just got a fresh vinyl. Some stunning sound on there. Not the whole record maybe, but 'Dangerous Type' is a fantastic sounding pop single. The drums are huge. The mix is so spacious, yet intricate. It doesn't really sound dated, just sounds good.

Soundwise I would say The Offspring - Americana, but SMASH beats it by far with better songs.

Rather than cluttering your thread with my opinion about the definition of punk and the merit of various genre names, I’ll just answer your question.

Anything produced by Spot
Descendents – Milo Goes to College (Spot), Everything Sucks
All – Allroy for Prez (the wet stage), Allroy Saves (the dry stage), Breaking Things (the Destroyer stage)
The Dead Kennedys – Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
The Germs – (GI)
The Ramones – Rocket to Russia (not the remastered crushed releases)
Minor Threat – any (all recorded at Inner Ear)
The Sex Pistols – Never Mind the Bollocks
Fear – The Record
Iggy Pop - New Values

All fabulous performances and appropriate recordings. Sure some of it may be considered sub-par purely in terms of fidelity, but the ethos and aesthetic of this music would have been diminished, IMOP, had they been produced on huge budgets. This music has a DYI spirit that these production styles fit the music.

I'm gonna spray paint this all over the walls of the city and if you don't like it well too bad.

...also Blink 182's "Enema of the State" is pretty well recorded. You said "Pop" punk...I loved the early Replacements stuff like "Tim", too.

Punk IS anti-pop... what kind of stupid question is this anyway? No offense, dude, i just hate it when the record biz co-opts good art for the sake of making themselves richer. f*ck pop-punk music.

Thumbs up

Everything from Blasting Room!!!

The last ONLY CRIME record sounds perfect.
new LEMONHEADS is awsome too.

There is a song on DESCENDENTS "Cool to be you" called ONE MORE DAY which is my reference to tune monitors and PA systems.

Great to know that Jason Livermore is a GS too!!!

+1 for suicide machines the first one i cant remember the name.
+1 for pulley "esteem driven engine"
+1 for propaghandi "less talk..."
+1 for lagwagon "trashed"
+5 or so for the refused "the shape...."

ill also add:
pennywise "unknown road" and "about time" both killer albums song-wise and
production-wise.
unwritten law "unwritten law" the first song called "harmonic" sounds REALLY good.
textbook pop-punk imho.
fat wreckords "fat music for fat people" is probably the best pop-punk compilation ever
imo.

pretty much anything that J Robbins has done recently has been pretty great. The last two Paint it Black records he produced were flawless and have a pretty natural sound. This band might be considered more "hardcore" then pop punk but then again I don't really consider half the bands listed on here to be pop punk. When I think of pop punk I think of screeching weesel not Cartel.

Billy Talent - Billy Talent
Billy Talent - Billy Talent 2
Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come

Actually, all except Refused are CLA mixes iirc, so probably anything by him.

The Germs, Belinda Carlisle and later Foo Fighter's bass player notwithstanding, were NOT pop music!

I guess I define Pop music as Top 40, and if any band is in the Top 40, they aren't Punk (some industry flukes aside).

Green Day, Blink-182, etc. etc... come on people! Are you kidding me? These bands are as Punk as my grandmother. I hereby submit a new rule on defining Punk. if it was mixd by either of the Lord-Alge brothers, it's NOT Punk!

Here's an even better idea: START A NEW THREAD and stop your off-subject banter. Your opinion might matter, but would much more welcome in another thread.
Of course if you're truly punk, you would post as many comments about your opinion as possible, tell everyone else to f-off, get banned, drink your pee, pull off peices of your skin, and die from a heorin overdose.
TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE NOT
1. INSERTED A SM58 IN YOUR RECTUM WHILE ON STAGE
2. ODed ON HEROIN OR METH (or both)
3. COMMITTED SUICIDE DURING A PERFORMANCE
4. AQUIRED HIV AND KNOWINGLY SPREAD IT TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE
5. BEAT SOMEBODY UP BECAUSE THEY SMOKE
YOU ARE NOT TRULY PUNK! YOU ARE POP-MUSIC-LOVING, COPORATION ENIMA-DRINKING POSEURS AND SHOULD BE CHAINED TO A RADIATOR IN A SKINHEAD CLUBHOUSE WEARING A SHIRT WHICH BOASTS OF YOUR COMMITMENT TO CIVIL RIGHTS.

As the founder of all that is true, I hearby ratify these edicts as law.

Class dismissed.

Seriously guys. I haven't heard arguments about what is truly punk since high school.

Well said. I am in high school... duh!

BTW, go listen to The Spits. They don't want a major label record deal, and although they didn't do any of that stupid shit you just mentioned, they would definitely kick your ass at one of their shows.
