Coolest chorus/phaser for mixing bass

I've often used some sansamp or distortion to make a "soundwise" boring bass track more exciting and easier to hear on small speakers. This of course works very well with punk, rock and other aggressive styles, but for softer styles other strokes are called for.

So what are the coolest chorus/phaser units for mixing bass?

I tried to persuade a friend who owes me money to give me his Roland Dimension D, but NO. What about the TC 1210?

I use the symphonic patch in the Yamaha spx990 and usually filter out the lows and highs on the way in. Keeps it effective but out of the way. The spx990 is cool as it has pre-fx HPF and LPF.

Don't be shy to try it on harder stuff too.

I also have a DimensionD but it lives on vocals. I'm sure it would sound great on bass aswell.

Oh and to the original poster, I also really like the symphonic patch on bass, don't often use effects on bass but sometimes it just works.

Isn't that a Clearmountain trick?

Actually a lot can work. Dimension D is cool, kinda unobtrusive if not overdone (I have only the hardware). For plugs I like the Lexicon PSP42. There is a setting called 'double'.. load it on a mono aux, pan the bass slight off center, pan the aux-effect slight contrary, sounds also bigger in mono.

Good luck...

I have a RE-501 tape delay that also has chorus. The chorus on that is pretty awesome, but you have to be careful not to overdo it or you sound like you are in the eighties. In a bad way. You hair even gets bigger.

Thanks guys!
I've used the spx stuff live, but I've mostly used it for drum reverbs so far. I'll have to try to get one (or a couple) on ebay.
Yeah, I have read about using filters to only "chorusize" for some shine and not muddy up.

It seems people here likes the UAD Dimension D, but I don't like that when you actually buy plugins you just have a very limited number of instances on a card.

I'm sure the Re-501/301's are cool, but they're mono right?

There's an old thread here where Thrillfactor says he had found a chorus that smoked the Dimension D for bass, but he would probably not tell it because of evilbay prices tutt

There is a 'real' Dimension D', as in hardware...you only get ONE use out of that

With the UAD-1, you get 12 to 14 instances per card. With my 4 cards, I can get up to 54! Even with only one card, how many strong chorus effects are you going to use in 1 mix? In almost 3 years, I've never found it to be a limitation...even back when I only had 1 card.

The REAL reason, though....well, if you heard the UAD Dimension D, you'd definitely understand. Trust me!

e..I get your point

About the UAD stuff I wasn't concerned if I would get enough instances of Dim D, but more of the limited instances of Dim D/Emt 140/1176 on a card.
Not much point in having a mac octocore with those plugins.
Sure it's nice to have four UAD-cards thoughthumbsup

Thanks for the ideas guys!

I hear ya...I forget how spoiling it can be to have 4! Honestly never having to really think about staking plugs (unless I have my designs on using a bunch of 33609s).

Sweet machine!! 8 cores...NICE! I have 4 right now and I just can't seem to get it to break a sweat! Of course, the majority of my plugs run on the UADs and a Duende. I don't *necessarily* have them for the offload, but for the insane quality. I've recently started tracking/mixing at 96k just to try to give my system a workout.

Remember 3 years ago? Remember how far the platforms were behind our software? We've caught up in spades! I will probably move to an 8 core in a year. Not because I need to, but because I want to! Sorry for going so OT.

I don't have an 8 core, yet I am going to buy a new mac past new year, not sure if I'm going the 8 core-route or something simpler and perhaps UAD-cards instead, great plugs!

Yeah, I don't think you'll necessarily need to mix on an HD-3 these days

Cool actually got one of those recently, haven't hooked it up yet. Definitely looking forward to try the modulation on it.
