Anyone use D'Angelo's Voodoo as a refrence?

I would give 2 good smokes and a bottle of Gordon Bierch Martzen for someome to tell me how to make my stuff sound like that.

"Woodface" - Crowded House
"Nightfly" - Donald Fagen
"Wildflower" - Tom Petty
"Details" - Frou Frou

Most recordings my clients bring in for reference are unbelieveably squashed. For a real laugh, put on "Kamakiriad" by Donald Fagen, turn it up to a loud but still comfortable level.

Now, without changing anything else, put on "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy" by Sarah McLachlan.

How long before you reach for the level control?

Some of my favorite reference recordings:

"Nightfly" - Donald Fagen - Jazz / Pop
"Un Tipo Comun" - Tito Nieves - Salsa (downright amazing)
"The Look of Love" - Diana Krall - Female Vocal
"Joshua Judges Ruth" - Lyle Lovett - Male Vocal / Big Band
"Melodies of Memories" - Franco Morone - Solo Acoustic Guitar

Peter Gabriel - So ... so many different textures there

Dave Matthews - Crash ... just HOT!

Seal - either of the first two ... glue and texture, plus vocal compression

plenty of others depending on genre of the particular song being mixed
