KRK Rokit RP6 to Adam A7 - is it worth the upgrade?

I am looking forward to upgrade my monitors. At the moment i am using KRK Rokit RP6 for tracking and mixing. The Adam A7s got my intention in the sub $1000 range. Would the upgrade from the KRK Rokit RP6 to the Adam A7 make a big difference or would you save up a little bit until i can afford better?

huge difference.

my roomate had the RP5s and a sub when I got my adam A7s. The A7s may not be as nice to listen to, but they are WAY more detailed in all areas, especially upper mids. For this reason they are very useful for recording and mixing. I think the upgrade would be a good call. I have not heard the RP6s but I bet they sound somewhat similar to the RP5s

I had RP5s, and while they are great for the $125 a piece I paid, they are not the ADAMs.

Is it worth it? In my best white boy gangsta voice: Oh hells yes!

Seriously, it makes a huge difference. The clarity in the upper mids let you craft a mix where tracks actually work together instead of just pushing stuff (with the KRKs) until it sounds crispy enough (or so you think, but it is in all the wrong places).

It is definitely worth it.

Not to hijack this thread, but has anybody compared the Adams to the KRK V6? The V6s sound pretty good, much better than the Rocket series (I think) but I have trouble getting mixes to translate with them. I need to get more bass traps, though.

Thanks,

Rappy

even though I've never listened to the ADAMS, we've got some rockits here (the 5's and 6's) and while the 5's aren't too bad for our tiny editing station, I find the 6's on the console nearly unlistenable. I'd considered checking a pair of the ADAMS out, and now I think I just might.

The other guys don't mind the 6's so much, so maybe it's just me...

It could also be the sub they're plugged into. Oh boy, now I've got to go change a few things around and do comparisons....

Thanks@!

WOW - great feedback so far

The specs quote 46Hz for the Adam A7s compared to 49Hz for the Rokit 6 as lowest frequency - so the Adams seem to have deeper low end. But in comparison the Rokit 6 box is a little bigger in size.

In reality which monitor gives you deeper, more defined low end?

The A7s are more on the forward sounding side, which allows them to be used for more surgical/critical type of mix work. The downside to this is that unless you know how to compensate for their forwardness, you can risk running into problems where your mixes will sound too dull or boring on other playback systems.

My solution to that has been to team up the Adams with the Mackies. The Mackies sound more linear and boring, and If you can create an exciting, forward sounding mix on the mackies, your mixes will sound exciting everywhere else. This helps me compensate for the Adams sounding too forward. So I end up doing all my critical work on the A7's and switch back and forth between the two sets of monitors until I feel the sound of the mix appears to be balanced between the two.

Once I got to a certain point in my mixing career, I found out that no one monitor was going to give me what I needed to ensure that my mixes sound above all else. At least by then though I had enough experience using different types of monitors in different types of settings that I knew exactly what I was looking for to suit my very own personal needs.

hmm...let's go further with A7 vs.________

- Dynaudio BM6A (originals or MKII)?
- KRK V6 Series 2 (unless that is the model referenced above, or the original V6, which are very different)

Thing is, I want the former, I own the latter. While I do like my V6II's, I've never heard them back to back with the Dyns, much less the ADAMs. If anyone can shed some light...

It's really a no brainer. I have heard the two side by side as recently as last week! The RP6 is left in the dust by the A7.

V6II, not in the same league as the RP6.

Agreed, and the new VXT series is very nice.

But he said he was upgrading from RP6 in the first post, hence my comments.

Go for the ADAM A7s. I have KRK RP5s which are now unplugged, sitting in a corner and up for sale. The really is no comparison.

As for the Dynaudio's... I purchased the BM5As and A/Bed them against the A7s. The Dyns sound "great"! They actually sound too good to be true. They are also scooped in the low mid range. I went with the A7s.

The KRK VXT6s are nice too. Is you have a large room and the monitors wil be at least 1.5 meters away they may be just fine. Any less than that and you are really going to know about their hyped upper mids. I went with the A7s.

Anyone notice a pattern here!
