Kick drum beater head

Just curious if anyone mics the beater of the kick drum (pedal side) and what mic is your taste for the job ? , I normally use a 52 or D112 as an inside kick.

Personally I don't (space issues), but I've heard some kicks mic'd that way, and it sounded great.

If you do make sure your pedal doesnt squeek at all. ive done it a few times but my pedal was too squeaky so i didnt end up using it.

Yea F miking the beater side....always sounds like poo to me and ive tried about 10 different mics there. Plus the pedal squeak is almost unavoidable. On the other hand after I use a 52 or d112 inside ill use the other outside or use a LDC (something cheap usually) on the outside about 2-3 feet back...almost like a close room mic and compress the F out of it...makes the kick huge when you get your compressor setting right on it and mix it with the one inside.

Tried it once too much noise on the pedl even with some nice lube
instead ill put a 57 all the way inside the kik pointing right up at the beaters strike zone
in conjunction with a CAD kik mic (right outside the hole) i keep forgetting the name of it for some reason

I did it when creating samples. Get the squeak out, then blend to taste. Works great for metal kick tones.

Been tried a few times, but never used that mic in the mix. Not because of the squeak or pedal noise, but just didn't add anything beneficial to the track. I used the standards for this side as well, like a 421 or a D112 or a D6. I would just play with the mic position inside the drum. If the front head has no hole and you cannot get inside the drum, then a batter side mic would maybe be more feasible. If you are looking for more attack or click, there are a few other tricks to get this. EQ of course, or the ole half-dollar taped to the head, or different beater types, like wood or hard plastic. Tuning and head selection will make a substantial difference too. I always opt for the other various options to get what I want and not use the batter side mic. Tends to pick up too much snare as well.

I guess what i posted came out a little different from what i expected, i was not talking about using a single mic on the pedal side only....... but letting the pedal side mic act as a outside kick mic.
