Dry instruments during mixing??

Hi!
I tend to not use any reverb or delay in these intruments during mix:

Kick Drum
Bass
HH (most of the time)..also OHs.

I know depends on the style of mix and music.....but only if I want it as an EFFX i would use reverb on the kick drum.

Any comments?

I tend not to use either very much these days.

I've always liked dry in your face sounds and try to record in rooms with nice natural ambience so the need for an artificial one is moot. I am talking about guitar music tho...

I don't use anything effects until I have mix tight. If it doesn't work dry, there is still work to do.

I tend to not use reverb on bass instruments or room mics in general.

I love the sound of room mics on a kick drum...especially when I'm doing metal records. Anything I can do to buck the "two staplers in a fist-fight" kick sound of some recent metal albums...Ugh.

I actually like tracking bass with a room mic. I've actually got an example of it in another post in the "so much gear" section. The thread is called "Rough mixes of basics session", if you're curious.

Hats, no, OHs, yes. I sometimes use a really short and bright plate to add a bit more sheen and sparkle. If I'm mixing something poorly recorded or recorded in a lame room, I'll use a little "Medium Ambience" from the 480 on the OHs to add some space to the kit. It works especially well on toms; I never seem to have any luck adding ambience to close mic toms.

I've heard of some old school AEs mixing bass with delay...I've experimented with it but not had much luck. I'm pretty sure I remember hearing about a lotta the "Back In Black" drum tracks having various delays and harmonizers on them in lieu of reverb. I can't remember the specifics, unfortunately, though.

I've been mixing very dry lately. All of the above, plus distorted ry. gtr's
Although there have been times in specific songs (fade outs, bridges etc) when I'll use reverb momentarily on kick, OH etc. For bass, some distortion or overdrive can be cool to give it distinction in the mix.

My Distressor's Distortion 3 for the kick drum is almost always used for rock stuff. If there's a DI bass track and the amps are too clean, I like using the BF Sansamp plug preset "SVT" for a little grit.

Othertimes an aggressive or heavily colored compressor on bass makes for similar results...160VUs are cool for that purpose.

Sometimes I set my Swollen Pickle fuzz pedal on an aux send and feed drums to that (especially snare) when I'm trying to get all Tchad Blake on they ass.

I've heard some old schoolers talking about using a Harmonizer on the bass to spread it out across the stereo field a bit...it's a technique I don't know, but it sounds interesting.
