BEST "d-e-a-l" to-date for Sample Library (MAC), Orchestral - please read in.

1st, the reason I say mac is, I have EWQLSO for windows (.dll files) and its the platinum library, however, it is several years old, right before they came out with the XP (or something similar) for more realism.

I haven't been up to date on this stuff for a while. Not sure how much I want to spend but will ask anyway as well as what I have heard, and again, please keep price in mind.

Okay, I don't like Garratian. At least what was out there a few years ago. Also, apparently the EWQL Gold XP is supposed to be a good deal but doesn't work with Mac Intels. Do these have legato type patches now similar to VSL?

VSL Special Edition looks to be pretty good with some good reverb. How well does this library work with Mac Intel? Any out of the box experience similar to EWQL?

Also, "play" is supposed to be pretty good from EWQL, not sure what price points they will have as well as how they compare to say legato patches from VSL..

Please, feel free to interject what you would buy as well as the best way to run this on a MBP and external HD, either FW 800 or eSata.

Thanks fellow gear slutz.

i've been wanting to know this as well - what the very best orchestral samples are. Ideally something that would work in Kontakt 2, but I don't mind if it has it's own software. Kontakt has a kind of library, but it's not amazing... I want amazing!!

In fact what would be the ultimate sample set, orchstral, percussive, asian etc

Are you using Logic? For the money, the orchestral samples that come with Logic 8 Studio are actually quite usable, i.m.o. I prefer them to the library that ships with Kontakt.

If you want to spend more, the VSL is pretty good.

You would probably like the "Special Edition"" from VSL. It seems to be a striped down (and inexpensive) version of their mega set, containing all the essentials. Their web site is well down and you can see and hear what can be done. I work with it and find it very impressive. As you noted, it's recorded extremely dry, so when heard wo/ a reverb it doesn't sound good. But they've of course done this on purpose to allow each user to creat his or her space. Even with a basic patch from space designer (Logic), this thing really comes alive.

They've also recently come out with their own sampler and sequencer, so you don't have to work in a traditional DAW.

Thanks, its just that having not been in the loop for a few years and coming from a PC side of things, gigastudio beta tester, EWQLSO Platinium, and knowing that the only new thing is PLAY from EWQL, I just wanted to see what my MAC options were.

Please feel free to keep the comments coming as I know SOME do not work with Intel Macs to date.

Cheers

If you use Logic and price is a factor than you really want IMHO to look at Kirk Hunter's Emerald, EXS24 version. Ruby is even better and I am using it with Kontakt but the EXS24 version is not yet available.

As far as I know, the orchestra stuff in the Jam Pack for Logic 8 comes from VSL.

In Logic on my MBP, the orchestral template does NOT show up whereas on the Mac Pro it does - - keep in mind, on my MBP, I do not have the ORCHESTRAL jam pack installed and someone at the Apple Forum said that if I do install them, the template will show up.

Does anyone know this to be true? If so, how can I get the templates to show up if the material (Jam Pack Orhestral) is loaded on a external Hard Drive?

Lastly, maybe its me, but coming from Nuendo, how do you trim, edit, fade audio tracks? It seems rather complicated as I am so used to bringing the cursor to the track and just having the cursor change to the right too. Are there any good videos in the work and not "getting started" but also PRO series (Mixing, Mastering ala Pro Tools) type of training.

I know Apple is starting FREE 2 hour training at some of their stores. Just waiting for some decent books, and online video.

Thanks

PS. The reason I ask is. Example, in Nuendo you can pick a VST instrument and route it to another instrument, in Logic, you have to run through a few hoops (environment) just to make this simple operation possible. Thank you.

Thought I'd bump this as I'm in a very similar boat to the OP... I heard that east west GOLD is incredible for the money and although has slightly inferior sounding solo instruments to VSL, it's recorded WET and works great straight out the box... (NB: THIS IS NOT FROM EXPERIENCE, IT'S JUST WHAT I'VE READ)

As far as FW800 / eSata external drives go, I thought it's extremely common for them to be on external drives - I'm pretty sure I've seen a sample library for sale which comes with an external drive (with the library pre-installed, duh)...

I would think that was very unlikely, as I have Logic 8 and installed that orchestral pack, and I have heard the VSL demos...

Are we talking about the same VSL, even? Vienna Symphonic Library? Because that, by a huge margin, is the one I want to save up for, and I don't see how you could possibly get near that from the Logic 8 jam pack.

the orchestral jampack in logic is actually a very condensed version of the old opus 1 from VSL.
VSL licensed a couple of their sounds to companys like Apple and Native Instruments as a kind of appetizer for their bigger libraries.
Those offer more variations, instruments and articulations.
The Special Edition is very cool.
If you need more specific sounds get the Appassionata strings and the brass stuff from VSL.
