event monitors

Heya,
I just got a pair of Studio Precision 8's for CHEAAAAAPPP from www.riksmusic.com. $1050 for the pair...and free shipping. The 8 inch ones... best price I've seen on them.

I have found them to be very natural, powerful, and transparent. Open in the highs, without being over-hyped or harsh. I can comfortably listen for long periods of time.

I used to work lots in a studio that had the Mackie HR824s, and everyone seems to love them, but I could never seem to get them to translate to the outside world. I always found myself having to ajdust, adjust, adjust the mixing to the monitors. I know for a fact that our room was screwed up too... so it's all subjective. BUT my room at home sucks too... I'm right up against a sheetrock wall, no acoustic treatment, very small apartment, and the monitors still do a great job.

I suppose the biggest difference I've heard in the Studio Precision 8's vs. the HR824s is the clarity and transparency in the low end. The SP8's, like the 20/20's before them, are ported, which some seem to think causes unnatural low end to come through, however, to me it seems very natural.

All this stuff is subjective, of course. I haven't heard the 20/20's enough to really compare fairly, but the little I have heard of the 20/20's, they seemed, like you said, okay, but nothing special. I thought particularily they were a little harsh in the midrange. To me they sounded "pushed" or something... like they were trying to sound a certain way, rather than letting the music sound the way it wanted. I don't know if that makes sense... But I think the SP8's are a big, BIG improvement.

I have talked to 1 other person who works for a music retailer who is also switching from the HR824's to the SP8's, for similar reasons. To each his own, I'm sure people can get great results with either.

Hope that helps!

precision 8

Thanks for your report.
I went back to those reviews I read, they were indeed for the precision 8 NOT the 6.

I plan on getiing a pair to check out for a few days.

Anyone else have comments on the event precision 8 ?
