Anyone know what Taavi Mote is up to?

what is the drum machine being used on 1999? that's a classic prince sound and i always wondered what was making it.
as well, there's a "drum" sound that occurs in both "when doves cry" and in "1999". in "when doves cry" it's acting as the snare (it's hit twice and repeated, starting at 0:03) and in 1999 it kind of has a 16th-note repeating thing going on with it (also first heard at 0:03 (radio edit) coincidentally enough). is that a modified/pitched linn sample? fairlight? old-skool mic and cable? i'd love to know what that sound is...
thanks

It's reported to have been a Linn LM-1 combined with Boss pedals (vibrato, octaver, flanger, etc).

I hear ya.

There was recently a Linn LM-1 up on Ebay for $6,000. Not sure what it actually sold for, it appears to have been sold off line.

I had a lot of experience with the Linn 9000 which is also pretty great. They pop up occasionally a lot more reasonable. My song 'Evertrue' was nothing but a Linn 9000 and me. Very crude programming on my part, though. (On my MySpace link)

Talking about a bright guitar sound..that acoustic..yikes. But it becomes the song somehow, a beautiful song. And a great album.

What kills me about Prince is we can have a page on his production, a page on his songwriting, and 10 more on his musicianship and live performances.

The guy is amazing. Not every song is a gem (some are dogs), but he really has some beautiful ones.

Starfish and Coffee
Morning Papers
Tangerine
Purple Rain

I could go on and on and on and on.....

Agreed. Shame about the rap though. Prince should stay far, far away from having rap in his songs.

I was talking to John Blackwell, Prince's recent drummer, last year. Found it interesting when he said Prince came up with most of the beats in his songs - John and past drummers, for the most part, played Prince's drum grooves. Made me appreciate the scope of Prince's composition and arrangement. In comparison, I have some unedited sessions of James Brown where you hear his compositional style was to vocalize a couple bars of a horn riff to show the band what he meant, then count off and let the band do its thing. Tune would go on for 15-20 minutes of grooving and different lyrical threads, then they'd edit into a song. Couple tracks on "Motherload" where you can hear this.

No Rap?

I fully understand people dislike of the rap/hip-hop genre. Never has so a genre been filled with such crap. But dislike of a music technique itself. That like hating Bela Flek because rednecks play banjos. Prince SHOULD rap because he does it so much better than 90% of the rappers out there.

Buy an Eminem record and vibe. After a while, you may understand.

I know what you're sayin g, but compare him with Method man or any of the Wu_tang crew... er Clan... or Common or even that nutter Cee-Lo, it just doen't do it for me either. I much prefer his quirky singing voice.... Buuuut I'm not gonna take anything away from him!

You are misunderstanding me. I didn't say I disliked the technique; I grew up on PE, Run DMC, NWA, Slick Rick, Maestro Fresh Wes (cause I'm Canadian), Tribe, etc. I fully appreciate rap. I have a healthy complement of hip hop albums in my collection. You are being little quick to jump to conclusions.

Name one Prince song that has rapping and doesn't sound, well, cheesy? He's an awful rapper himself, but even when he has guest rappers on, it's like the music and beats aren't conducive to the style. Even "Undisputed" on "Rave Un2..." with Chuck D, my all time favourite rapper and rap lyricist, falls flat.

I think there is good reason Prince gave up flirting with rap. I think he recognized that he didn't do it well and it just didn't fit with his music.

Erotic City & Uptown would be in my top 10 too!

FYI, the drums on 'Erotic City' were done with a LinnDrum, rather than the LM-1.

Residing here in Minneapolis, we are lucky and get to work with former/current Prince members all the time.

Prince and The Revolution drummer, Bobby Z. has an office at our studio and is a good friend. Some of Bobby's Simmons drum modules and other things are stored here. Yes the LinnDrum was used alot on records.

Bobby's brother, David Z. produced and engineered lots of Prince tracks. Also many other cool records, Fine Young Cannibals, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Kenny Wayne Shepherd etc.

I can see if anyone can answer any specific questions.

Doubtful the Purple one would chime in.

Last I heard he wanted to make a new house in the shape of the Prince symbol.

Peace, Todd

That's interesting and not surprising to me. One of my all time favorite Prince tracks is Tambourine from Around the world in a day. It's mostly just Prince on drums, tambourine and a ton of stacked vocals. His drumming kills!

Anyone here done sessions with him?

<< Deeply effected Linn sidestick >>

That's an interesting bit of trivia.

3121 Rocks as well as the other albums mentioned. Prince is the man! Who else can jam on keys, gtr, drums, as well as sing and write hit after hit" AND he's funky!

Has anyone here done sessions with him?
