Jack Johnson vocal chain on "Broken"

Hi Guys..

Hopefully I don't get slammed for asking this question

Anyway, I'm really a big fan of the vocals on the song "Broken" by Jack Johnson. It's on the album "Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the Film Curious George".

In this song, the vocals are nice and rich, and it sounds like he is pretty much right on top of the mic. To my untrained ears I would say he's so close it sounds like he's using some sort of dynamic mic. But I'm probably wrong.

Anybody have any idea what could of possibly been used to get that particular vocal sound?

I seem to remember either the engineer or his friend posting here that they used the 1176 12:1 trick, Attack 6 release 7 and like 10 - 15 dB GR.

What! Why? The guy is awesome. And the guitar sound and the vocal sound is terrific. I would really want to hear details about the recordings. I've used his songs as a reference for both mixing and producing.

Exactly, say what you want about the lyrics/style of music, I can handle it ( I'm personally a big fan ). But you have to at least admit a lot of his stuff is just beautifully recorded.

I think he's got a nice intimate sound. But not so intimate that I feel like I need a shower afterwards.........

This is probably a very, very long shot, but do you think this trick would work on a low end compressor ? such as maybe a freeware compressor plugin...

...ok stop laughing

I love that CD. My woman bought it for me my last birthday. The sound quality is about the best I have heard for that style. JJ isnt a mountain of chops, but he uses what he has better than most!

Well, I looked it up, and the album I was referring to was produced/mixed by Robert Carranza. Anybody know him? If so, can you ask?

jack recorded his latest record in an eco-friendly studio so they probably didn't even use microphones,,,they used like gilligan's coconut phones or can telephones...that are ecofriendly.....not a dynamic though......he sings to soft......great for the right ldc...

Thanks.
Nice to have Carranza on board. Would have been nice if he'd sticked around for a little while longer, though. We need to know more.

send him a PM or email him using GS

i'm interested to hear more too. i love jack's stuff, i don't care if other people don't agree. i just wish that if people didn't like a band/artist that they would just stay out of the thread and not spoil it for everyone else

There is nothing wrong with asking about vocal chains, people do it all the time in the hip hop forum.
