There is a transport control in there already. See the video again (it fades in when you tap on the scribble strips). Currently the transport is where you see the timecode. I may put the timecode somewhere else... I'm also considering adding a dedicated transport "page" with a large "footswitch" style button for punch (you could use your big toe or something to trigger the big punch button) and a finger controlled scrubber/scroller as well as the usual host of transport buttons (but larger) and buttons for track selection, in, out- etc...

I was thinking it would also be cool to use the accelerometer inside the phone as a panner... (think Wii but with the iPhone as panner)- People who think you are crazy will know for certain if you start panning by making insane gestures with your iPhone.

From what I've seen the accelerometer in the iPhone is nowhere as good or detaled as the one in the Wii controllers.

I give you credit for creating a very cool piece of software, but I have to ask:

How is this useful?

It's not useful unless you want it to be. If you are a one man operation then being able to remotely monitor levels and control the transport... can be useful. Folks with assistants already have a capable remote.

Beta program info

For those who didn't see my message below and want to join the beta program, there is still room (about 3 more slots available).

To join, I need:

Your full name and address for the NDA. I've received a few requests to join but no info.. Please PM me with this info and I will email you the NDA.

Sorry for the formality but I need to protect the software while it's still under development and I can't send you the NDA without that basic info.

Thanks again for all the kind words and support!
alex

Check out this other thread with more technical details of the remote:
Anybody know if Iphone?

Awesome.

I have an iphone but I won't be modding it for fear of bricking it.
Hopefully apps like this will be available legally quite soon.

This seems like a really fun amaze-your-friends toy/novelty but not entirely practical. I mean, like, under what condition would this make life easier for you?

The iPhone is a tiny little interface compared to using even just your regular screen and a mouse.

Am I missing something here? Anybody feel like their mixes would be faster using this method?...

I think its cool - if it works over some distance, you could use it as a Tranzport style remote to arm, and record while in the live room...

Yes, you are missing something.
A lot of us record bands without assistants.
Having transport control that is portable and battery powered is a pretty cool thing.

I am not suggesting that you mix a session from this tiny window but I could definitely use this lil app.

think remote/touch faders for automation

At a kit or amp with overdubs, stop record.

Effects plug-in tweaking while sitting in the sweet spot etc.

Why not?

I hope people make a sort of universal
daw remote fader, etc cause it would be great.

And definetly legit thru apple I won't touch
the bricked apps.

I've never really been into the iPhone, but that is pretty amazing. This proves that people could come up with really cool and creative apps- hopefully apple is paying attention.

If you havnt used a touch screen
regularly you might be suprised how intuitive
and erygonomic they can be.

And don't get hung up on iPhone

I predict touch screens will become standard
in most phone/CPU's not too far off fwiw.

It's an Apple product and if it works for ProTools it will work for Logic.
For me as a remote it makes alot of sense and is a much more interesting
interface than my Tranzport

I was thinking it would be cool to support their plugin architecture so that I could support the same DAWs as they do on my iPhone (they support them all it seems). I don't think I can distribute their code but I could probably tell people where to get it!

One more thing: Folks that are interested in beta testing: please send me your full name and address for the NDA. sorry for the formality.

Yes yes yes. Even if this is some elaborate hoax to get root access to my phone and my computer, if this software works, I'm totally okay with that.

GIMME!!!

Okay, just kidding. But seriously, I would love to help you test this out. Seems really interesting.

Isn't it just VNC to the box running PT? In that way, you could control anything with your iPhone. I have VNC on my Treo and could, essentially, control PT from my Treo too...

You could have 4 iPhones as mini mixers for Headphone Submixes in the tracking room. Want more vox or drums...Just turn it up! That would be friggin awesome. Not really cost efective now...but new possibilities are definitely there!

apparently apple is opening the iPhone up for 3rd party applications in february or march (or perhaps announcing it at MacWorld in Jan)....

so we'll have a flood of cool stuff without having to hack the phones..

Notice when he flips the phone sideways, the record-armed track that is next to the automated fader. On the computer screen, it is a stereo track, on the phone it is a mono. Same with the aux tracks.
