Thread Starter | Explosion inside my computer...
Just bought a brand new, rev. 3 DP G4/1.25, got it yesterday, installed everything, working fine, went to bed. Got up, started the new baby up, and the system time had reset to 1904. Damn, bad battery, in a new computer! Client on his way, reset the sytem clock, and made a few calls. 30 minutes later - BANG! Looked in the studio and saw a mushroom cloud above the new computer. It was still running - wasn't sure what had happened, restarted and found out that one UAD-1 card wasn't working. Damn, is that what blew up? Opened the computer and found that the internal battery had exploded, turning the plastic battery clip into shrapnel. The battery itself looks like a bricquet. Short description of a long day - 2 dead UAD-1 cards, dead computer (motherboard looks like an overhead view of a war zone). I guess I needed a break! (So far, Apple, Expercom, and Universal Audio are being very helpful. I'll keep you posted.) Sigh....H |

I think it was just a bad battery - a friend of mine had a similar experience with a battery inside a keyboard. He was lucky - it just hissed, released the pressure slowly rather than exploding. The Apple reps said it was the first time they'd heard of this happening. Universal Audio wants to put one of the cards up on their wall - the one that had a part knocked off of it by the battery shrapnel! Call me lucky....H |

At least you weren't down on all fours with a flashlight, wide eyed and looking for the problem when it went off! You're real lucky I'd say. Strange story. War |

you'll become famous... the man whose computer card became a piece of artwork at the wall of a major manufacturer... but there's this urban legend of these walking toy animals that exploded all because of batteries inserted the wrong way... tutt good luck next time! |
