002 to 003 upgrade worth it?

Hey guys,

I searched around but haven't found a ton of info comparing these two. Now that the 003 has been out awhile, is it a worthwhile upgrade? I'm using a lot of outboard with my 002r, and its fine, but if the 003r's converters were as big of an upgrade as some people say then it'd be nice to have the converters and interface integrated into one unit. I doubt I'd use the pres much, but if the line ins are cleaner/clearer that'd be worthwhile to me...

Anyone have any comparisons of the 003r vs. the Ensemble or Fireface? Just want to get a feel for how it stacks up...

Thanks,

Mike

You might be better off to send your 002 to Black Lion to be modded. There aren't many new features on the 003, just improvements to what was already there.

There are a lot of new features on the 003...word clock i/o, multiple headphone mixes, a nice monitor control section, etc.

Plus if you don't have the MPTK, getting it for half price on the tradein is a great deal.

And having the 003 controller is totally, totally worth clearing desk space off for.

So for $1500 can you get all those improvements plus a controller plus the MPTK any other way? Add the new software, the new ignition pro/factory plugs, etc. And a new warranty.

Thanks guys...I'm not too into the BLA thing, though I'm sure its a good path. I'd rather put my money towards other things than modding inferior gear. Just my preference. I'll certainly keep it in mind though...

Word Clock alone is a great feature sorely missed on the 002. I'm not sold on the mix interface, so I really just want thoughts about the sonic difference between stock 002s and stock 003s....thanks!

ive a/b'd playback only of the same song on an 002 and an 003.The 003 is noticably better sounding in sound staging and imaging and has a smoother sound. You can make very nice recordings even tracking through the onboard pre's.
