Thread Starter | My first and last Mic pre question
As of Now I own the following pres. Avalon ad 2022 ( my clean pre with cool impedance switching.) Avalon 737 ( hip Hop clients require this, and the eq is clean) Chandler Tg2 (no explanation needed.) Anyways I am at a point where I need to upgrade the rest of my pres to outboard instead of my board pres. These pres would be used on toms, outside of kick, and maybe for room\overheads. Should i just get more channels of the tg2, or go with BA apis, and a chandler ltd-1. S of now my drums are recorded with tg2 and the ad2022 altering between kick/ snare and ovberheads, and the 737 on outside of kick , or mono room mic, and the rest are run by mackies. What pres would youn get , and what would you use on each drum. Thanks in advance, although I know there is no best answer. I am simply trying to get my brain to think alittle before I drop the cash. |

i personally wouldn't get more of the same channels. i think variety is best. my top list contains... cranesong flamingo pendulum mdp-1 martech mss-1 dw fearn the list goes on.... but i'd definitely go with another 'flavor' good luck, joshua |

TAB-Funkenwerk's V72s would be worth looking into. You may have to wait a while as there is a waiting list but are surely worth the wait. Everyone here knows how much I love them. www.tab-funkenwerk.com |

If your budget is stretched, the PreSonus M80 is worth a consideration. Very solid sounding, in-yo-face vibe (as opposed to transparent and hi-fi), 8 channels for under 2k. No bells and whistles (unlike the rest of the PreSonus line), but great for almost everything. I think you can even swap out components to *voice* channels differently. I haven't bothered yet. I also have a 737 and an Amek CIB - they get used first for vocals and acoustic instruments, but the M80 works great with guitar and bass amps - better than the other two for this application. Definitely better than the Mackies, but not quite up to a Neve. I have been hearing that the Apogee MiniMP is supposed to be great, but I haven't tried one yet. I suspect they are the more transparent sort of pre. You can't have too many...H |

The API 3124 is another one to consider. That's probably the one your friend is talking about. It does a great job on drums as well as other sources. Try to audition as many different units as you can and see what floats your boat. Good luck. |

I agree that an API 3124 would be a great move at this point.

Another vote for the 3124+. Everyone should have one. It's sooo cool on drums and guitars, even acoustics. An added bonus is that with the M option it becomes a 4 into 2 mixer.

| hardrock - an alternative
the aforementiond pre's are very nice but as an alternative, you can build a nice discreet mic pre for about 10 bucks in parts , nice and clean . what i do is then muckaround with the components to see what "colours" i can get out of it. an experimental song i did is" everybody asks me for a love song" at soundclick.com/bmanning. the vocal is pretty forward to give an idea of how far you can get with 10 buck of parts.there are lots of schematics on the web. |

that song came about because so many women complained to me noone writes love songs anymore. no special processing. just normal track cleaning up. i have lots of mics from 5 dollar on up. it was done in about half an hour. probably an akg. |
