Which solid state recorder to get?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on which flash recorder to buy. I've read lots of reviews online, but I just can't really draw a conclusion just from those. I'd like to get the opinions that have used multiple devices, and have made a personal preference!

Currently, I'll be working with whatever built in mic the unit offers, but eventually I want to get a pair of Neumann KM184s.

What I want to record, is ambient sounds, and found sounds, specifically for sound design uses (both in electronic music and video).

My biggest concerns are sound, and dependability. If I randomly hear a sound, I want to be able to whip out the recorder, and record it, feeling confident that I've caught a high quality recording of the unique sound.

This is NOT for band rehearsal, or sketching ideas on an instrument, or lecture recording... this is solely for production work.

Now, that said, I'm not rich, so my price range lies in the under $600-700
price range. Unfortunate, but thats my situation.

So far, I've looked into reviews of the M-Audio MicroTrack II, Edirol R-09, Marantz PMD660, Sony PCM-D50, Marantz PMD-620, and Marantz PMD670.

The Korg MR-1 looks interesting, but it has a harddrive, which could cause noise, and can also be bumped.

Thank you VERY much for your input!

I'm not speaking for myself here, because I've not used any of them. But people who have used the Edirol R-09 that I know, love it.

You can always get one in your price range, and continue saving for later when you are ready to move up.
